Neal,
Damn that SUX!! I wonder what they mean buy "a long time" I'd be really pissed if they didn't try to work with me on something to drive while your ride is tied up! Walk in there and tell them to put it all back together good enough so you can drive over to the GM dealer and trade it in on a Silverado. I used this on a dealer once and it worked for me... Good Luck..

Dear MikeS,

Remember, the TQ is a fluid coupling, the status and condition of whcih is controlled by the pitch of the TQ's vanes. When you lock it up, that is for best gas mileage, in an attempt to reduce the difference in gas mileage between manuals and automatics in late-model vehicles that is inherent in the fluid coupling. When you lock up the TQ, you lose it's stall effect, and drop rpm's. When that happens, you lose a lot of torque, you can see it on the chassis dyno.

Mind you, we're only talking about when you are at WOT, when you need all available power, and that is the only time we delay the onset of TQ lockup, is at WOT in 2nd gear, to restore that lost torque. At any other throttle position, the TQ is still going to lockup.

Feel free to give me a call if you'd like me to explain it in detail.

Mike,
I think I understand where my confusion is. I'm deducing that locking the TC up in lower gears to keep the engine/transmission combination more efficient is the best way to get torque to the ground. Maybe I'm missing something... Does the converter lock up in second gear under "normal" driving conditions? I can see how not locking it up under hard acceleration the motor would "wind up" faster. I guess I was thinking about more normal conditions (dummy me) or say pulling a trailer...

Thanks
Mike

So the flip chip is available for all models, or just the Lightning? That seems like the way to go. I guess that is what I was getting at above.

Thumbs up

Crash1,

Actually, you could get a flip chip with the normal superchip program and a custom program for NO2, or firmer shifts, or any other combination of programs if you like! The Flip Chip contains two distinct programs and you switch between the two with a flip of a switch! I did it mainly so I'm NOT locked into running 92 octane all the time! After running it with 92 octane it will be hard going back, but the fact remains, I can! I hope this helps!

Cool

Wow, this really drifted off the original topic didn't it?

Antway, back to the original question....

I had a custom program done as well, but decided to go with the Flip Chip. The custom program gives me all the advantage of the normal superchip while alowing me to still use regular unleaded fuel. I don't see the power gains with this program, but do have the benefit of the transmission tweaks and the removal of that annoying pause between 1st and 2nd gear, while using the cheaper fuel. The nice thing about the flip chip is I have the regular superchip as well, so after topping off with high test, I flip a switch and get the full effects of the superchip! And the difference is quite significant! It works really well for me!

Thanks Paul!
I like the idea of a stock program and a performance program at the flip of a switch!

Is the flip chip much more expensive?

Dear Crash1,

Yes, the Flip Chip is *considerably* more expensive than the regular single-program Superchip. Due to the Webmaster's restrictions on blatant commercialism, which we agree with, we cannot mention exact pricing here on the message boards. But just to give you an idea, it's list price before our F150online discount is 70% higher than the regular Superchip, as it's 2 chips in one. So in my opinion, you need to have a specific purpose you intend to use it for to make it worth that additional expense. If you do have a need for it, then it's a great product, and a lot of guys have been going with them lately. Flip Chips are custom programs, so for ordering info and pricing you will need to contact us privately, either in email or by phone.

Paul T listed some excellent uses for the Flip Chip. It can contain any 2 programs, and is available for any Ford vehicle, including the Powerstroke diesel. The Lightning was made a Flip Chip application, and for that vehicle, in Position 1 it's the unmodified factory program, and then in Position 2 it's the performance program. We did this so that the owners of these very expensive supercharged Lightnings could have the conservative factory program available at the flip of a switch just in case they couldn't get a good high-quality premium gasoline when traveling cross-country, as we want to protect that supercharged engine very carefully. Others like Paul have been having us make them with one program for regular gasoline and the other for use with premium gasoline, that has been very popular lately.

Feel free to drop me a line or give us a buzz, and I'll be happy to go over all the details with you, Crash1.

Thank you Mike!

Once again, you are an asset.

I will get with you on ordering info.

So, if I decide to get blown, I may want to consider the flip chip? I do want to keep my engine alive. I understand supercharged engines are somewhat sensitive to fuel quality and octane.

Does the same drive cycle apply to the flip chip when you change programs?

Dear Crash1,

When you get supercharged, it certainly *could* be an excellent use for the Flip Chip, to use it like we do for the Lightning. But so far, very few people have gone with the Flip Chip in their blower installations on these non-Lightning F-150's. What they have done is to simply have us make a custom program in the single-program Superchip, which they use all the time. And that's fine, as there are actually very few areas in this country where you can't get a good premium gasoline. So you can go either way on this. For the absolute best and most versatile setup you'd want to use the Flip Chip, but it's not an absolute necessity.

With the Lightning, those Eaton superchargers are already running more boost than most of the aftermarket supercharger kits for the F-150 like the Powerdyne, for example, and then many of our Lightning customers increase boost even further. So they're pushing those engines much harder than you normally will by installing an aftermarket blower on a regular F-150, so for the Lightning, the only way we will even make a chip for them is with the Flip Chip.

So while supercharging is an excellent application to use the Flip Chip with, it's not an absolute necessity. What is important is that you get a custom program to properly and safely tune that engine, and that can be done either in the single program Superchip or the Flip Chip, it's up to you. If it were *my* supercharged vehicle, it would probably be wearing the Flip Chip, but you can go either way.

Gee, I danced all around that one, didn't I?

With regards to the relearn cycle with the Flip Chip, it will occur the first time, and then after that, as long as you don't stay in the conservative mode for most of the time, you won't see most of the noticeable aspects of relearn when you toggle over. You may feel a bit, and it may take 15-20 miles before you get all the power, but it's not like starting all over again from scratch.

Question

Mike,

After reading this last post, I have a question.

You wrote: "With regards to the relearn cycle with the Flip Chip, it will occur the first time, and then after that, as long as you don't stay in the conservative mode for most of the time, you won't see most of the noticeable aspects of relearn when you toggle over."

When you talk about the "conservative mode" are you talking about position 1 of the flip chip, or are you referring to driving habits, i.e. conservative as opposed to aggressive? Also, being as I'm more interested in improving gas mileage, if I drive conseratively after resetting the computer, will my gas mileage improve because the computer relearns a more conserative driving style? I realize what I'm saying is pert near impossible with the added power the chip produces, but I'm really trying to practice some self control through this next tank of 93 octane to see what my mileage is like. The last tank netted me 15.6 MPG, but that was some pretty aggressive driving (ahem, I mean playing!)

What are your thoughts/experiences with this?

Dear PaulT,

Yes, I do mean in Position 1, as that is in most cases the more conservative of the two programs that are usually loaded into the Flip Chip.

For as much playing as you probably did, it sounds like you got pretty decent gas mileage for the first tank of premium. Most people get their worst gas mileage in that first tank or two after installing the Superchip, simply because they are using more heavy throttle than normal, checking out the new power from the Superchip. Then once the novelty of it wears off, you get better mileage simply from not romping on it as much over time.
