Exclamation I'm Chipped

I have been chipped but used chipped. I picked one up for $100. I am excited - I want the snow to go away so I can use the extra horses.

With the installation I have a 1998 reg cab v6 4x4 and had to remove the battery to get at the bolt holding the computer cable to the board. Also, when removing the aluminum cover on the back/front of the computer box I only had lithium grease on the contacts I wiped this off with swabs and I was ready to go. I did not have the lacquer coating on the contacts. Total time of installation <1 hour. Hopefully gas doesn't keep going up or I'm pulling the chip for the rest of the winter.

Dear Silver Bullet,

You *DO* have the conformal coating after the grease, *every* Ford EEC-IV & EEC-V computer ever made does, and so does yours. The conformal coating covers the entire circuit board. It can fool you, because it is clear, and you can't see it easily until you actually start scraping it off. Most vehicles won't even start if you do not remove that coating, but even the ones that do will eventually go into limp-home mode or stall altogether if you don't go back and remove it. I did an experiment on two vehicles, a 94 Explorer and a 91 Mustang GT 5.0, and I did the same thing, just removed the grease, and did not scrape the contacts. Both vehicles ran fine for almost a year, and then within a week of each other, *both* vehicles went into limp-home mode, so I had to go back and of course scrape that coating off. The same thing will eventually happen to yours.

Please feel free to give me a call and I'll be happy to go over this with you, I don't want to see your vehicle stall on you when you're on the road, that could be very inconvenient!

Congratulations on being able to pick up on a bargain!

Deat ATST,

We can count on you to pick up on that! Hey, I swear I was talking about the computer.

Let's hope my wife doesn't see this, or I'll *never* hear the end of it!
