tuner/towing

well i have done a search and read for 2 hrs straight, but havent found what i was looking for.
i probably am too parinoid but the tow/per setting on the super chips micro tuner should be used when towing any trailer, even say a 2 place snowmoblie trailer or jet ski trailer. that is correct right?

or could i get away with using the performance setting. i dont tow very ofter and if i do, it is for short distances.

by the way, a big thank you to mike t. for all of your great replies to everyone's questions. top notch customer service

thanks

Mike Troyer has answered this question many times and the answer is: If you tow (doesn't matter what the load) you must use the tow setting.
I tow a bassboat about 8 months of the year, in the off season I change it to the performance setting. It's simple to change settings once you do it a time or two.

Hey fellas,

I also have a question about the tow setting. I tow fairly often, so I get the word on that. However, when hauling a heavy load in the back, 1,000lbs. or so, do you have to stay in the tow mode? Sometimes I tow a 10' trailer with mulch, or something light , less than 1,000lbs. I'm wondering if hauling is considered the same as towing according to the tuner. Thanks in advance. Rich

As long as you haul a load no more than your truck is rated for you are ok in performance setting . Read through this thread and you will find your answers. https://www.f150online.com/forums/sh...hreadid=129213

Here is a quote from Mike Troyer that will answer most questions:

The "max" performance program sets the A/F's (Air/Fuel ratio) for maximum safe power in these heavy vehicles without additional load on the motor from towing.

A "max performance" tune does not allow room for another 2 tons or more of load on the motor by towing - the EGT's (exhaust gas temperatures) could potentially reach levels that are too high for safe towing of heavy loads up grades - hills, mountains, etc.

And no, before someone else asks, that doesn't mean that it's "safe" to tow loads on the "max" performance program on flat level ground, either.

In this aspect, it's about load - the more load on the motor, the less timing & more fuel it generally requires, all else being equal - towing is *load*, thus when towing, richer A/F's are required to feed the additional load on the motor & keep EGT's in check. The best A/F for maximum safe power without towing is a bit too lean for safe towing of heavy loads up a grade - and we have to either be able to allow for towing loads all the way up to the vehicle's rated limit, up a mountain - or no towing at all in these F-150's. Just as sure as we tell someone OK, go ahead and tow 1500 lbs. on flat level ground, someone will think it's OK to tow 6000 lbs. up a mountain. There is over 3000 lbs. of potential weight difference from the lightest to the heaviest F-150 configurations, and we have to allow for the heaviest weights (loads).

Hi Everyone,

Just finally getting over the flu (still not 100%), & trying to get caught up.........and by the way, thanks *VERY* much to Orlando for his help, & others as well........thanks!

In the "MAX" performance tune, you can still load your truck up to it's maximum **on-board** payload - so you can haul 4 passengers and still use it. Or, if you and a buddy needed to move a refrigerator in the bed, you could still do that, too.

What you *can't* do with the "MAX" performance tune is tow - period. Also, you cannot load the vehicle beyond it's **on-board** weight ratings.

The simple way to look at it is that you can still haul anything around *in* the truck, right on up to it's on-board load capacities - you just can tow.

If you had to move a 1000 lb. load (say, a 600 lb. Jet-Ski on a tiny ultra-light 400 lb. trailer) a couple of miles on flat ground, you could probably get away with that - but just as soon as I say that, there's always someone who wants to push it even further, and try towing 2000 lbs. on flat ground for 200 miles, then another will tow 3500 lbs. up a mountain, and ..................it never ends.

So the simple answer is, NO TOWING on the "MAX" performance tune - period. Anyone that tows *anything* on the "MAX" performance tune does so strictly at their own risk.

The Micro Tuner gives you enough programs to do anything and everything these vehicles were designed to be able to do from the factory (and more) - so use the correct program for the correct purpose.
