What is Techron?
basically it is just the brand name of the detergents used in the chevron gas. now a days, most all gas stations gas is the same so just go with whomever is cheaper and you'll be just fine. WAY back in the day it used to make a difference but imho their is no difference between am/pm, chevron, texaco, ect.
We use Chevron oil and fuel and know the owner of the supply company for Chevron. We buy Techron in bottles it is supposed to be an injector cleaner like any other injector cleaner out there, except of course theirs is the best that is if you listen to them. I use it every 15,000 or so. dont know if it really helps I know it doesnt hurt so as long as it makes me feel better I guess I will keep using it.
Don't know what Techron is, but I do know that it will get rid of carbon in the combustion chamber. I know first hand that it works. Had an '87 with the 5.8L engine that eventually pinged on high octane gas. After one Techron treatment, it stopped pinging, even on regular gas. I was clued in on one thing by the guys at Chevron. Change your oil after the treatment. They were right. My oil turned black with carbon after I burned that one 1/2 tank of treated gas.
I just finished treating a 4.6L in a Crown Victoria with 150,000 miles on it for pinging on regular gas. Carbon build up was what I suspected as the root of the problem. I put in one of the large bottles of Techron, treats 20 gallons and filled the tank, (18 gal tank). Ran this tank out and tested the car on a tank of regular gas and I dont have the pinging any longer.
I had tried a lot of other fixes and nothing worked, this stuff works.
I plan on using it in all my cars on a periodic basis

this is way off the subject but i get my gas at either conoco or sunoco because they do not import their gas from the terrorist infested middle east. you can see where major companies buy their oil on the department of energy website.
Techron - What it is...
I work for a company that services and transports the 6000 Gallon ISOcontainers that are shipped internationally. As far as DOT and EPA compliance the tanks carrying Chevron Techron are labeled as Kerosene Class 3, UN1993 for shipping purposes. I am sure there are other additives but Kerosene is over 75 %. Many oil companies do not actually refine the gasoline they sell at the stations. Many different customers of ours (Which load at the same refinery) Will bring gas to different brand stations. The drivers will often add the "Additive Package" into the load of gasoline once loaded from a quart jar.
Wow I had No Idea
Techtron is kerosene? Man< i had no idea...ok ignorant question...does it do more that just clean?? any performance advantges (besides stopping pinging) to using this??
I don't think he claimed it was kerosene. He claimed it was more than 75% kerosene. I'm about 70% water, but I wouldn't claim to be a swimming pool.
I think the kerosene would be a carrier for the active ingredients which do the cleaning. It'd be cool if somebody with access to some gas chromatographs, HPLCs, or ICPs would run Techron and see what it's made of (at least what the major solvents are).

Techron is a blend of 3 solvents. The solvents are a high aromatic aliphatic hydrocarbon (Mineral spirits with about 16% aromatic), an aromatic hydrocarbon (Super High Flash Naptha) and a low aromatic Aliphatic Hydrocarbon (Mineral Spirit with less than 1% aromatic).
Navi,
Does the Techron actually do anything good for fuel injectors etc. or is it snake oil. My vehicles seem to run better while it is in the tank. When that tank is burned performance seems to return to normal. You seem to have some insight into the behind the scene stuff with additives.

Well I work for a Chevron distributor and we are also a chemical distributor so I have some knowledge of the different chemicals. You can go to the Chevron USA website and it discusses Techron on there. The main thing it does is helps keep your fuel system cleaner especially if you are using or have used a non branded fuel. The benefits aren't nearly as great, and may not even be noticed, if you have been using Chevron gasoline or one of the other major brands that put a similar additive into their fuel. I say once or twice a year should be adequate if your are using good fuel. Even though I sell the Techron, I have come across another product that seems to work better. It's called Heartland Fuel Additive and has helped many sluggish running vehicles. Keep in mind, that none of these additives are cure all for a poor running vehicle, but it and a fuel filter change can sometimes take care of a minor problem and it isn't all that expensive. It's not necessary to use these fuel additives on an everyday basis.
