Sounds like it has been re-painted.

Did you buy it used off a lot?

I bought it privately off of a guy. I don't think that should have much to do with it though. Maybe if it was kept inside and waxed more often?? Dunno, not impressed though.

Angry Clearcoat cracking

Just curious to know how many people are having this problem. My roof and hood look terrible! It's really easy to see on the black paint. My truck isn't under warranty, so that's no good. It looks like somebody cut a 1/4" off their hair, threw the clippings in the paint, and then painted the truck. Not very nice looking! Should the paint be sealed up? Or are big chunks of paint going to start peeling off. Anybody have a good solution or inhibitor for this problem? I really don't want to take it in to get painted, never looks as good as factory. (Course, this looks like crap, so......) Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it was repainted, and the primer was not allowed to dry properly. It doesn't show up immediately, usually six months to a year later.
You'll probably have to get it repainted,by a shop that you trust. Sorry to hear about that, what a shame,,,,,98

No, it's never been painted, the previous owner told me that, and I've been over the truck with a fine tooth comb, and there are no signs of it ever being painted.

What year is your truck. I have a 97 and the clear coat around the F150 emblem slightly peeled away. I just took some fine sandpaper roughed up the edges a bit and touched it up wit hsome new clearcoat. I noticed the other day I have very small spot on the front bumper that I need to do the same too.

I have noticed that a lot of newer rides, of all different makes and colors, with paint pealing off down to the metal. What’s up with that?

Also I have an older 84' t-bird that the clear coat went all to hell. I had it painted about four years ago. Then about two years back I notice one little spot on the roof had pealed away. Then over the next year other spots appeared. Now most of it from front to back is gone.

Gremlin,

Is your T-Bird Silver by any chance? Ford couldn't keep silver paint on their cars during the 80's-early 90's if their lives depended on it. Rarely will you see a silver car from this period where the paint is still intact. The seemed to have cured a lot of their problems, but now my paint is started to crack. So, who knows?

I've got the 1/4" hair trimmings on my black hood as well, I bought mine used and assumed it had been repainted although there are no sure signs. I tried Turtle Wax Color Cure wax yesterday and was not impressed although it helped conceal the white "hairs" a bit. Either way fresh paint is in my future.

CDeHeer97,

Have you checked your roof as well? If your hood has it, I'll bet your roof's got it as well! Not very impressive, huh?

jleinweber~

Mine was Dark metalic blue originally and I had it repainted the same color. The only thing that is coming off it is the clear coat. Kind of bummed me out.

I was cleaning my truck today an noticed that on the roofs the is about a dozen little cracks up there. All of are craked in the same fashion. They kinda look like chicken or turkey tracks, sorta like a star shape, sorta liek this *, except for the horizontal line. Man does that **** me off. Maybe someday I can have the truck repainted. You would think after all these years that they would of perfected the clear coat process. Oh, well
