Faded Plastic and Heat Guns

Found on a buried thread last week where people use heat guns to restore the black on the faded plastic.

Like many others, I have tried Armor All, Back to Black, etc. only to have the faded gray look come back after a few days.

So, I borrowed a heat gun for my 2006 Lariat 4x4 and it worked great. It took about an hour to do the bed rails, tailgate and the front cowl around the wipers.

I'm going to try and post a pic of the before and after.

Since this is first heat gun experience...how often did you have to "redo" the plastic on your wife's xterra?

Thanks.

I tried a hair dryer for kicks before I borrowed the heat gun an hour later. It's no where near a heat gun. The heat gun will literally melt the plastic if you leave it in one spot for over 10-15 seconds up close.

I know they get hot because I touched the end with my pinky finger on accident...ouch!!

I need to try this route sooner or later. Just have to borrow a heat gun to do so.

I'm still using Pledge and its been workin pretty good.

Good job OP looks great.

I did this as well, only thing I didn't try it on was the bedrails or wiper crowl. I tried it on the door handle and it didn't work, nor did it work on the rear window surround, was just melting it.

Never tried Showroom New Restorer, eh? That's not a dressing, it's a dye.

I'm thinking about using the Showroom in the Spring on mine. Was thinking about painting with Krylon Fusion, but with Showroom...I can probably just tape off and have at it. Great recommendation.

IMO this is the best way to go. The stuff lasts and is a breeze to put on. Great product.

Have you actually applied this product? Did you have to tape off your paint or will the dye wipe right off if you slip? Just curious how careful you have to be with this stuff.
