Cleaning skid plate ???

When I first installed my skid plate I spent about an hour trying to polish it. It was a major pain in the butt. I used half a can of never dull, all metal polish, and a huge pile of rags. It looked so so but now that's it's on the truck it's a little harder to clean. No matter how many times I clean a spot it just keeps producing black gunk and isn't really polishing up. Anyone ever experienced this and how can you clean it and bring it back to a polished look?

Thanks for any tips.

Run it through a water puddle. That's what I do.
