Megs 105 & 205

Bought some of this stuff, but it's too cold here in MN to use it yet...but it's getting closer.

I have a 2002 Lightning, E4 paint, and mild swirls.

Has anyone here done much with these two products yet? I hear they are supposed to be the God and Jesus of paint correction, but I am interested in personal experience, pads you've tried and techniques with a PC.

Any insight is appreciated.

Jim

I've used 105 on the seriously neglected roof of my Expedition. I used a 4" Orange LC and it worked great. Almost to the point of being ready for wax. I could have used 205 to do another pass and it probably would have left it perfect. However 205 wasn't out yet so obviously I didn't have any. I have some now, but like you, the weather isn't exactly cooperating.

Isn't 205 the least aggressive of those two?

Yes it is. I think 205 was meant to be used after M105, though I'm pretty sure you can just use M205 for lighter swirls where the 105 would be overkill.

So are you guys saying that a pass with 105 and then a pss with 205 would be ready for wax?

Well, in most cases yes. Like most things in life, there are exceptions. 105 is a lot more aggressive than 205. However, 105 is aggressive to the point where it may leave behind hazing. Think of it as different levels of sandpaper. You start out rough to knock the high spots down but you finish down with a fine sandpaper. Same concept. On my roof, 105 did an amazing job. It has even been known to finish down exceptionally well considering how aggressive it is. However, it did leave some very light hazing. And I mean REALLY light. Most people would have been satisfied, however, like a lot of us on here, perfection is the only acceptable outcome. So had I been able to use 205 at the time, I would have been able to remove the light hazing and gave it a perfect finish. I could have used another finishing polish, but to be honest, I was pretty happy with what I accomplished and I was running out of time that day. I had things to do.

Meguiars is a common theme on here and for good reason. 105 and 205 have really set some high standards and Meguiars products are priced pretty well. However, there are other products out there. That's not to take away from Meguiars, but to remind everyone that they're not the only game in town. Menzerna makes great products. Optimum just released newer versions of their polish and compound as well as a new finish polish.

Awesome. What pads did you use when you went through the process?

I used an orange Lake Country pad. That worked pretty well but like I said, it hazed a bit. I haven't used 205 yet. It just came out this year. Northeast winters aren't exactly ideal conditions for detailing.
