What a difference a Clay makes

Did my 1st Clay job using my wife's truck as a guinea pig.. Probably gets washed 1/year, and waxed it last summer.
Wow.. what a difference.. from rough feel to glass smooth. Took me a couple sections to get the feel of using the clay and figuring out what it was telling me as I rubbed the car down, but it was easier and removed much more than I figured.
After Clay:

Then took Scratch-x to some spots and scratches. Figured out needed something more aggressive to remove some of the stain and scratches in the clear.

Before Scratch-X and Clay

After Clay and Scratch-X (x2, once with an semi-aggressive foam pad on my buffer)

Forgot to use Cleaner Wax!!
Applied 1 coat of NXT 2.0 so far, will do another coat tonight, and some carnuba coats later this week.

Water Beading After Washing, before other steps

I'll post after pics end of the week....

Jeff

so would say a Polish such as megs show mirror glaze remove the scratches, rather then hide them.

I thought Scratch-X was more agressive than it actually was.
Not sure which would be better, #80 or the Megs color system step 1. Got time to figure that one out as I probably won't strip this down and deal with the fixes for a few weeks as my truck is looking kinda dirty

I did like the NXT so far, but had a hard time getting it off. I wasn't sure if that was a function of me putting too much on or if the 1st wax coat is generally tougher to get off. I suspect I put too much on...

Thanks for the feedback and help as always..

Thanks,

Jeff

EDIT: LOL! put a pic of the used clay and forgot to put it in the thread, but it ended up on the Front page!!!! Not sure why I was gonna post the clay pic , other than to show how much it picked up...

As per Meguiar's (the manufacturers of SX of course), Scratch X has nothing in it to just "fill" in scratches. It removes them.

If you're having trouble removing NXT, then you're either using to much or not letting it cure.

Put the 2nd coat of NXT on last night. My trouble removing was definitely due to putting on too thick. Concentrated on getting it thin last night, and let it cure for an hour. Only spots that were hard to remove were where I got it too thick again.
Couple coats of Carnuba to go!!!

Couple of coats? All you need is one coat of a 'nuba.

PS: Did you wait twelve hours between each application of NXT?

No problem, I don't want someone to be wasting their time, their energy, and most importantly their money !!

Finished the 1st go around

Wash - Gold Class
Clay - Mothers Kit
Scratchx
Nxt 2 (x2)
Gold Class Carunba
Mother's Showtime
Shoulder was hurting

Lots of deep scratch correction to do. Found a hard line from the Body work done earlier this spring after Wifey's accident. I'll be taking it back down to the body shop to have them fix that.
Didn't realize how much flake the paint has, you have to get up close to really see the scratches. I might even drive it now.
Realy gained an understanding of the difference between a normal clean and what a detail really is.

After - Side

After - Hood Scratches

After - Side 2

After - Water Beading

Thanks for the advice -

nice job!

One thing I picked up from a post that Thumper had made months back- NXT wont come off as easily as you have heard if you apply it thick. I learned that very quickly as it gummed up the microfiber a bit

I wish this guy wasnt suspended because I would be curious to hear why he said this
scratch x doesnt remove the scratches, it hides them
I will agree that its nearly worthless in scratch removal (even with relatively fine scratches)- I havent had great luck anyway. But, I dont agree that it hides them either. And as stated by Roush earlier, the Megs site says this
The most effective way to safely remove fine scratches and swirls...Now by hand OR with a dual action polisher! Our new and improved ScratchX® uses diminishing abrasive™ technology to safely and effectively remove fine scratches, swirls, and oxidation. As you work ScratchX into the surface of your vehicle, the abrasives diminish and your paint surface is polished to reveal brilliant color and clarity. Clear coat safe, ScratchX will not create new scratches and will not simply "cover" fine scratches as most conventional products do.
