Scratch on hood

While filling up at local gas station yesterday, They were changing the price of gas when the wind blew a 15"X12" plastic sign and landed right on my hood. This is the only defect I've had after 3 1/2 years. I notified the manager and he was nice enough to tell me he would check and see if they would cover the cost of repairs. My question is if they say screw you, Is there any products that I can use to fix this myself. I'm not a body man and haven't been around clear coat scratch removal. Appreciate any help.

well small claims court could take care of that i would think. But anyway... can you feel the scatch with your fingernail? If so, its not going to be able to be completely removed but you can do a good bit. I would start with some Scatch-X (meguiars) and one of their foam applicator pads.. and put some emotion behind it. I was able to get rid of a couple of small places on my truck using the scatch-x

I agree with the Scratch-X advice. What kind of products do you have at your disposal?

Nothing but polish and wax. I can sure feel it when I run my fingernail over it though, pretty deep.

If that's the case than nothing short of getting it repainted is going to fix the problem.

That sucks dude. At least they're looking into covering it for you.
It's funny... with all the wind we had here today I saw a plastic number sign fly off a marquee today too. I was thinking about what would happen if one flew off and hit my truck. Now I know...

The are ABSOLUTELY liable for this damage. If they blow you off, just contact your insurance agent and have them go after them.

Thanks Jim, I hear ya. I'm going to get an estimate Monday and give to the store manager and see where it goes from there. I have no clue about the cost of repainting the hood, but I'll bet it's somewhere around $300 but I may be off. For some strange reason, I have a hard time having damage to the hood. A little nick or scratch somewhere else doesn't have the same effect on me, but the hood, which I can see driving down the road all the time just plain sucks. Hopefully, this will all turn out in my favor. Thanks for the info about insurance, But my deductible is like 500 bucks.

Steve

They are liable for the damage. Contact your insurance company right away and explain the situation. They will tell you what you need to do.

To me that does not look to bad. I would see what they are willing to do, before you try any scratch x or any other type of polish.

I have a bad feeling about what's going to happen. The gas station is going to say screw off. It's going to be coming out of your pocket since your deductible is higher than the cost to fix, more than likely anyways. Not to mention there was no police report etc to document the damage when it occurred. Good luck man, hopefully the place doesn't screw you over.

Just another reason why I am learning how to do automotive painting.. so when freeky stuff happens, I'll be able to fix it for 1/2 the price or less.

I know, I can just envision reaching in my back pocket, hit my wallet and thumbing through 20 dollar bills. Gut wrenching to tell the truth. But at least it isn't something serious, life threatening or harming my family. I guess i can live with that.
