Touch Up Painting 101, that is...

On the way back from the infamous Miami Lightning meet last weekend, I took a rock on the edge of the hood.

I figured I'd document the repair incase anyone needed to do the same thing.

Find the right color touchup paint and medium lacquer thinner.
This is the closest tint to our color.

It doesn't take an expensive airbrush kit to make these repairs. I think this kit was only around $35.00
I mix 2 parts thinner to 1 part paint, but depending on your gun, you may mix differently.

I taped off the area and built it up with the touch up paint. I let it dry over night because of the thickness. You can fill with any type of body repair materials, but this was the only thing I had available.

Once dry, I taped off the area with a clear tape. By doing this, you won't accidentally scratch the surrounding areas when sanding. Sanded it down with 800 until it was nearly flush with the tape. Followed up by wetsanding with 2000 until it was smooth.

Gave it a quick, thin coat with the air brush about 1-2 inches around the area and polished out with wax cleaner. It's abrasive enough to take any overspray off and leaves a shine. Followed up with McGuire's Gold.

If you knew it was there, you might be able to find it. Good as new. About 2 hours well spent, IMHO.

Ive got a couple spots on my truck. I received touch-up paint from Ford a couple weeks after I got my truck. I was thinking about doing that too. Hopefully it comes out as good as your job... heheh.

I took the pic for you today, but it really didn't come out right. Sundays another day, suppose to be sunny, so I'll give it another shot

Everytime I tired to tpae something off and spray it, I got tape lines I couldn't sand out. I know I was doing something or several things wrong just do not know which ones. To thick of a coat, maybe?
