2006 black FX4 (what products?)

I am trying to put a list together of what products to order. I have only told friends and family to get me autogeekonline gift certificates for Christmas. I have traditionally used Zaino and Zymol in the past, but am looking for something better. I have a black 06 FX4. If it makes an impact on your recommendation, the truck is typically only driven at night and on the weekends and parked in a garage. I am looking at ordering the Poorboy's product but not sure what all I need. I am open to suggestions?

I am planning to purchase either a PC or Megs DA. My question is what pads to use and what brand How many of each do I need?

Microfiber towels seem to be the new rage. I have used 100% cotton wash clothes in the past. How many, what types and sizes would you recommend?

A grit guard set up for two bucket method. What would you recommend for a wash mitt?

I have plenty of blue tape. What kind of brushes would you recommend for getting residue from the cracks and crevices?

Rolling Rock, when can I schedule a time to make a trip down your way to learn how to use all this stuff correctly?

If I am overlooking anything please feel free to make a suggestion.

Read the sticky (first thread in this forum) first. This will help out with many of your questions.

From there, post back... v2.0 will happen soon (maybe even before the end of the year).

Good luck, black is a beast!! Proper equipment and techniques go a long way. Do some searching here and you'll fine so much info you'll probably be overloaded!

When I started I knew nothing about detailing, but by listening to these guys here I can now properly care for my truck.

Shoot come on down...just held a class yesterday.

I am a major fan of MF's. I have more than my fair share of them. I like the 16X16's from ADS, bulk buy is alwasys better and I do have the top notch 16X24's I use. Those are my fav's. I get those from Specialty Motoring.

For a new truck, basic products are needed. Kind of depends on how much time to you have also. Agree with RP, make sure you read the sticky.

A good easy to use product (Although it does dust) is Optimum Polish. Pretty versiatle product but it does really well on Black. My product of choice is Poorboys. The great news is that there are many great products out there so you will just have to see which ones you like working with the best.

Black is a bear to work with...but it can be rewarding.

A photo of a Rover. Optimum, Megs #21 followed by S100 wax.

Detailing

To start off I would go with some Poorboys for sure...Zaino and Zymol are great but you have to get the paint clean first.
I usually do a 2.5 Poorboys first
then go to the Poorboys EX sealant and then finish off with ZAINO....
This all being done with a PORTER CABLE.

Another option is Optimum Poli Seal topped with Opti Seal. I've been using this combo a lot lately, it will give a ton of slickess, nice depth, and excellent durability.

Poorboy's Natty's blue would be a great topper too.

Not a ford, but I spent an entire day on this Suburban of my neighbors. It had never been even waxed before and had only been run through auto car washes. That was a project but it turned out nice for black. I use all Meguires products. This took 2 claybars, 2 washes, a pile of microfiber towels, and some sore hands and arms to get done. I haven't yet tried to use a DA or power buffer. Keep in mind that this vehicle is way on the far side of 100K miles.

I have read the sticky.

Here is what I have so far in a list of Poorboy's product.

SSR3
SSR2.5 OR SSR2 ? <--Do I need both or just 1?
SSR1
PROFESSIONAL POLISH
PASTE WAX (BLUE)
EXP OR EX SEALANT? <-- This is the one I am unsure of

How many of each size do you own?

I planned on a full weekend project on just the exterior the first time around.

Shoot come on down...just held a class yesterday.
Work should slow down around February.

Hey bro.

I think you could skip SSR2.5. I have all of them but I haven't yet figured out where to use 2.5 They were meant to give you options. I would get SSR3 and 1 for sure. I have used SSR2 a few times and its hard to determine when to use it but I say good to have in your cabinet.

I pretty much have all the PB products, at least 75% of the entire line. And use them based on time. For instance. if I didn't have time to SSR1, Polish, Seal, Wax, I would SSR1 then PwS then wax. Same for PwC (Blue) if I didn't want to seal. But the results with EX-P as a step are hard to beat. (you don't need to SSR3 every detail)

As for MF's I have 3 dozen of these from ADS
Premium Quality 16" x 16" Microfiber Polishing Towel
In the Dark Gold (which is really bright yellow)

they are pretty good, but I really prefer to use the Soft Edge Premium Detailing Towel 16" x 24" from Specialtymotoring, I have 2 dozen of them along 2 dozen of the 16x16 he Awesome Towel from SM. They are far superior. But the key to any MF towel is how you take care of them and treat them.

My company year end is Feb 28th, weather should be good too.

Here is a list that I have started. I am leaning towards the MF towels from specialty motoring. I am having a hard time trying to decide on which brand and how many of each of the DA pads. What type of wash mitt are you using? Grit guard will be ordered once I figure out if the local home depot has the buckets with casters available. What am I missing?
