Smile Washing, Waxing, stress release?? (long)

Okay, everybody knows I am an old geezer, and being an old geezer, you have lots of stories..

Just want to share this one, because it relates to detailing/washing/waxing.

Way back some 30 odd years or more, this incident always stand outs in my memories. And I am not saying this to put down the other guy and to put myself up.

Me and this other guy was always in competition with one another. Sometimes we would be on the same team, but most of the times on opposite. The game was gambling, whether it be shooting pool, playing cards, playing dice, and even with women. He had a corvette, I had Z car. We would do all kinds of things even race each other.

One day we were in a card game for big stakes. I lost big, I mean real big. After I lost my money, I goes outside, and proceed to start washing and waxing my car. My rival who just happened to win all my money, comes outside and at the sight of me washing my car starts laughing big time, saying that I must be the dumbest person on this earth. He stated, "here is a fool that has lost all his money, and now he is washing and waxing his car, he has got to be one crazy $#@%@$%@$". I smiled and kept right on waxing.

About 8 years later, that same person had a nervous breakdown behind losing his money and his woman at the same time. This person is my age, and to this day, he has not fully recovered.

When I wash and waxed my vehicles, whether it be car, bike and now truck, it really soothes my mind, lets me release any stress.

Okay, I hope you all DON'T think I am crazy for sharing this...

Yeah man, I notice I feel better after I do a wax job. I'm one of those people that anything I do, I do it full speed ahead. After I get done waxing my truck, I feel like I took a valium. That feeling goes very well with a beer or two.

I know the orbital gives me a better, maybe at least quicker shine. But, there is nothing that takes the place of a nice day and a good 3 stage hand wax that makes your arms sore the next day. That wax and wash cleans the mind just like the truck. It sounds stupid, but I think only car guys think like this. Sometimes I wish I was just a car owner not a car enthusiast. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper.

Never fails... happens ALL the time...

I'll come home from a mega-crappy day at the office or in the field... I'll be so strung out from work that I'll be the biggest jerk you can imagine... my wife will banish me to the garage and, basically, MAKE ME wash my truck. Works like a charm EVERY time too...

It's weird but, when you find pleasure in doing a job right and you're able to see the end result, it really does serve as a form of 'self-medication'.... You're definitely not the only one man...in fact, I think this is how my mini-business formed.

Almost nothing gets in the way of my Sunday morning wash (and sometimes wax). I look at it as indespensable therapy.

I have always thought that getting the truck dirty was the fun, relaxing part. Nothing like pulling back onto the pavement and hearing and seeing the mud fling off and hit the wheel wells. The cleanup has always been the "Honeymoon" period, where I tell my baby how sorry I am for abusing her and bring her gifts, like soap/water, wax, wheel cleaner and tire dressing. I always tell her "I won't do it again", but I always do...

I do wash and wax my truck and my wife van at the same time, but not detailed at same time. It took my half a day to finish the work, but I do detailing alternately. when I just found out clay bar post in other thread. It was really a stress relief or might say a half day excerise.

Yep, best therapy there is. I had a 57 chev, i friend and i painted it, some ( lots) of orange peal. Wet sanding and cutting compound and cut wax and normal wax. As a construction Supper. I would get so stressed that a would tackel a fender or a door as a day project or part of an evening. Very calming.
