baked on godzilla crap
baked on godzilla crap
I’m very picky when it comes to paint finish on a vehicle especially Black paint like I have.
On the hood, there are 2 spots a quarter inch round and 6 miniature splatter marks about 1/8 round just a couple inches away from the bigger 2 spots where a big bird must have took the crap of the year on the hood of my Mountaineer before I brought it.
I notice each time I wash it, it’s an eye sore to me. The spots the dinosaur craped on left LOTS of tiny little crack marks where the sun must have baked it on the hood from the last owner not washing it right away. You can’t feel the cracks with your finger nail, nor did I have any luck making it go away with any wax I used.
My question is, will these tinny little white circle cracks come out with a buffer? Or am I looking at having to re-paint the hood to get rid of it? If so, what’s the cost now a days to repaint the hood?

I agree 200% with Navi... we need pictures...
But, I'm almost certain I know of the problem you're talking about... what you're probably seeing is clear coat failure and, in short, there's no cure... and really no way to lessen the look either. I had two spots on my 2001 KR's hood that were like what you described... and I've seen it on several client cars.

Thanks for the replys guys!
I wanted to take a few pics of it today and post them on here, but we had a little ice storm last night and the hole trucks covered in ice yet.
RP....If I decide to let the hood go without being re-painted for a while yet, theres not a chance that the clear coat will start to "flake off and peal away" is there?
Do any of you know what the cost might be about to re-paint a hood? I read somewhere that it's about $250.00 per panel to paint. Does that still sound about right?

Keep it waxed and you'll never see any clear coat peeling. I had an explorer with 250000 miles that had perfect paint, from frequent wax applications. For a good quality paint job, you'll be looking in the $200-$400 range. (those are atlanta ga prices) Now, I have a buddy who runs a maaco (and they aren't like the typical maaco) and they paint entire cars for $299 and do a relatively good job, but if you don't know the maaco, I wouldnt chance it

bird $**t needs to be removed ASAP, or you end up with what you have. as for picture, the are kinda useless. i dont post pics on my website of close ups like that cuz even something that is a hoopty can look good in pics. you say you have cracking (looks) but cant feel them with a fingernail?? you should be able to feel them. as for the rubbing out post above, yes, it'll look worse cuz the product will likily get stuck in the cracks and you wont get it out, leaving all the cracks white and way more noticable...
a repaint could do it, but if you cautious and handy or slightly experienced, wetsanding it out may do it

Your paint is too far gone to get the poop out. Try your finger(literally) with some rubbing compound on the tip. Go fairly slow or medium speed and wipe and check every 5-6 cirlce so you dont burn the paint out. Your are most likely have to spot paint over when your done. NEVER leave bird droppings on your ride. First shoot the bird them apply cleaner every time!
**UPDATE**
I'm upset. I was outside today washing, and put a couple coats of wax onto this Mountaineer today since the weather broke some, and I noticed the spots on the hood where the Bird from hell took a crap all over it is now starting to flake away!
The clear coat is flaking in little tinny peaces.
Nothing I can do now but to take it in and have the hood repainted. I don't want to do that, but I hate the looks of the hood as it is today. Would 250 bucks be about right to repaint the hood from a dealership???

I would try a local auto repair center rather than a dealership. I beleive you will get a better job and probally cheaper. I would let them know its not an insurance job and you will be paying for it out of your own pocket.
I don't htink you'll get it for $250. You're most likely looking, for a good base/clear, in the vicinity of $400. Temporarily though, to keep the flaking to a minimum, p ut some clear nail polish over it.
