Tailgate F-150 Emblem Removal

I just happen to have a spare F-150 XLT emblem from the front fender of a 98'- 03' F-150 sitting in my tool box. The only difference between this emblem and the one on the lower left side of my tailgate appears to be the addition of the XLT and Triton stuff.

My question is this. Can I remove the existing tailgate emblem and replace it with the fender one? If so, how do I get that bad boy off of there without messing up my Oxford White paint?

Many thanks!

i don't think anything will work for you man! might as well sell it to me for real cheap since it is probably broken!! but seriously, as far as removing any of that tape that they use, i really don't know. might want to put some layers of masking tape around the emblem and use it as a cushion to pry that puppy off. just be real dainty with it!! that tape is unreal!

I used a heat gun (DON"T GET TOO CLOSE WITH IT) to warm the adhesive, the pried it up with a small screwdrive. Just kind of wedged the screwdriver between my hand and the emblem and kept pushing it outward so I didn't scratch the paint. No problems at all...

The result is my sig picture... Did the same thing with the fender emblems...

I think they should be interchangable. LAriat trim levels use the same fender emblem as the tailgate.

As far as removal? Heat gun to loosen up the adhesive and then use fishing line to work under the adhesive to separate from the metal.

I'm pretty sure there are 2 plastic prongs that fit into two holes where the emblem gets mounted.

If you need more information, do a search as this has been discussed a couple of times in the past (not lately so you need to go back at least 6 months)

F150Europe, I'm actually thinking of going the other direction by replacing my side badges with the simpler F150 only badges. Before I do, I was curious as to whether the Triton V8 portion of the new badge you bought would / could separate from the F150 XLT upper portion of the badge? If so, maybe I could just remove the Triton V8 portion of my badging to get to a smaller set of side badges. If Ford hadn't placed those alignment holes in the fenders and tailgate, I'd have removed all the badging on my truck a long time ago.

Thanks guys! The heat gun / fishing line trick worked just great and the new emblem is on. By the way, the "Triton" part of the emblem is separate, but removing only that part might be a bit tricky. Thanks again!

Mike,

2stroked already answered your question.
It's an easy job if you take off the fender badge first.
If you leave it on the truck, you have to cut the tape between the Triton and the XLT badge. The tape is one piece if I can remember.
Now, cutting the tape, might damage your paint underneath.
