Maximizng storage for short beds?

I have a '12 SCREW short bed. I have a hard top bed cover which is great for keeping things semi-secure and dry on vacations, but it's getting harder and harder to fit all our gear under it for long trips. Trying to think of options to maximize space, even if it means getting rid of the bed cover. What do ya'll do? Pictures?

A shell is an option, but I know as soon I as put one on I'd need to load something tall

This is why I love my 8' bed.

I've had so many people ask me to haul them sheet rock during a rainy day it ain't funny when their trucks have a 5.5 or 6.5 foot bed.

My next truck with either be a SCAB or Screw with a 8' bed in a SD. It'll be school bus l o n g! lol

Need a Crown Vic or Mercury GM ... they have huge trunks.

Seriously though, I have a black plastic trunk strapped in with some flares, a extra jack, a 4 way lug wrench, a couple emergency blankets. I made a net hung across the rear about 18" ahead of the tailgate so groceries, gas jugs, trash bags, etc ... "what ever" stay at the back near the tailgate. It's both adjustable and easily removed via hooks. A set of lashing straps cost maybe $10 and it supplied materials and adjusting buckles. I have a "Undercover" hard bed cover. Truck has Line-X and I have the floor part of an old drop in liner laying in it.

I gotta quit posting and watching TV, second double post today. I have a habit of hitting "back" between too.

I like that net idea. I use a rope like you have there for gas cans but net would be good for a lot of stuff.

For my problem, I decided what takes up the most room on vacations is fishing rods, so I'm going to get a roof rack (not a bold on!) and move them up there, that should help-- we'll see.

Yeah, I was thinking a bit today, waiting to find out if I had jury duty or not (not), and it occurred to me a roof top intended deal like a "car top carrier" would work on a bed cover top or cab top.
