Installing the Ford version of a BedRug...

OK, here the scoop...

After lurking around listining to all the discussion about bed liners, I have decided on getting a soft liner from Ford (a rebadged BedRug??). I'm going to be replacing the cheap standard plastic liner on '05 King Ranch with the Ford "Sport" liner. My questions are for those who have done this kind of installation.

- I have a Nighthawk hard tonneau cover, the standard plastic liner and a bed extender, I know I have to remove the bed extender but do I have to remove the tonneau cover to remove the plastic liner and replace it?

- Anyone got any tricks and tips? I'd rather learn from others before making silly mistakes

- Anyone ever try to sell a used plastic liner? How did that go. I figure I'll just give to whoever wants it. The used one will be in excellent condition but I'll bet they are hard to sell

Thanks in advance for your advice.

I replaced the Ford version of the Duraliner with the Ford version of the Bedrug, much as you are about to do.

I have a soft tonneau cover and yes, I had to remove it to remove the plastic liner. There are clamps along the side of the bed which interfered with the removal of the plastic liner. You'll most likely want to remove your hard cover while you install the Bedrug as getting a good fit up in the front of the bed is critical to having everything fit properly.

Can't tell you anything about the extender. Don't have one. Have the 8 foot bed.

I can tell you though, you're gonna just love the bedrug!!!

Tips and tricks? Take your time. Remove the plastic liner by bowing the floor up in the middle and letting the sides come loose. then, pull it up and out.

Clean the bed. I did a wash and dry.

The bedrug is held in by velcro strips. Read the instructions several times and make sure you understand where the strips go. I'll repeat that part, read the instructions several times and make sure you understand where the strips go. Get a bottle of rubbing alcohol and clean the areas where the velcro is going to go. Let those ares dry thoroughly. Put the velcro strips on the liner as per the instructions. Zip the bottom and the sides together and carefully put it in place. Try to get it as correctly positioned as you can before pulling the plastic strips off the velcro. I'll tell you, once those stick on strips are stuck on, they are there for the duration! I was worried that they wouldn't stick. I shouldn't have been!

Most likely, you'll end up with a wrinkle or two. As long as they're small, they'll settle out in a couple of days.

Put the tie downs back on, put your bed extender back on, put your tonneau back on..... enjoy!

Oh.. so far, I still have my used, perfectly good Duraliner. Guess there's not much of a market for used Duraliners. I keep thinking I'll come up with a good use for it, but so far nothing!!! Oh well.

I think you made a good choice to replace the liner with the bedrug, but then, I'm obviously biased!

If you are in Northern California or Nevada, I might be interested in your old liner.

Regards!

If you want to put your 4 tie down brackets (on the wall of your bed) on the outside of the bedrug, instead of just covering them up, here's how I did it (as well as others in the forum). It took me 30 minutes to do all of them.
After the bedrug settles, unzip the wall material to gain access to the bracket. Remove the bracket, and reinstall the screw back into the hole only about a quarter of the way (you'll want to be careful - cross threading brings on a whole new problem). Put the bedrug material back to where it goes, then feel for the lumps where the 2 screws are. Take a knife, such as an exacto knife, and make a slit right on top of the screw head, no bigger. Push the material over the head (like buttoning a shirt). Remove one screw, put it through the bracket and put the screw right back in where it came out, again, being careful not to cross thread. (If you "lose" the hole, use an awl to relocate it. You're in business. Repeat for every screw and bracket, and it will look like a million bucks.
Good luck,
Bill

Thanks all for your feedback so far.

As soon as I get a nice weekend I'll try to install it, It's kinda cold up here lately

Another dumb question...

How do remove the bed extender?? I thought it would be easy and there would be a neet little trick to it but I have not figured that one out just yet.

Thanks & Cheers,

Hi...

I paid $529 CDN (approx $440 US) before taxes. I didn't think that was too bad since it was $60 CDN more just a month earlier.

Cheers,

How to remove bed ext

on my bed extender, there is a small two sided button (if that is right) that you push twords the inside of the truck then lift up on that side of the extender. Im pretty sure they kept the same design into the 04+ models but not positive.
Oh and the button is located right at the pivot point, just feel around you will find it pretty quick. its hard to see if you dont know its there. also be sure to squeeze both sides of the button thing to make sure you get a good release from the pivot point.
and i would assume you would pull the rest of the bed ext hardware from the bed wall to put the bedrug in.
