Thumbs up Do-it-yourself spray in liner (roll)

For those of you there like me who hate to pay someone to do something you can do yourself...check out the Herculiner bed liner kit.

This is the same polyurethane material used by Line X or Rhino Liner that comes in a 1 gallon can with all neccessary tools to roll into your truck bed. The only other thing you really need is some chemical resistant gloves as you do NOT want to get this stuff on your hands...it doesn't come off.

You have to prep the truck bed just like you see on those video clips from the drop in liner companies but hey, that's what it takes to do the job correctly. I just finished and it looks and feels really tough. I think I got it about 1/8 inch thick.

You can get it a Pep Boys for under $100. Sure beats the $350 I was quoted from Rhino. Even if it doesn't last quite as long, it was almost 1/4 of the price...

Anyone else tried this? I'll post pictures tomorrow...

From what I have heard before, I think that you will be sorry that you went cheap on your 35000 dollar truck. I hope that you are happy, but I think that you will regret not letting Rhino or LineX do it.

I thought the purpose of these posts was to answer questions and diseminate useful information. I would also have thought that as a senior member, you would have more to offer than just "from what I have heard". If you have specific information, please post it. If I wanted a knee jerk reaction to my question, I would have asked some other moron. Further, it is ignorant of you to assume what I paid for my truck. Since you asked however, it was $30,300 fully loaded King Ranch 4x4...

I guess some people value money more than others.

Sorry that I came off negative, but after reading my post, I can see why you might have thought that. The reason I said "from what I have heard" is because I do not have any first hand knowledge of the Herculiner. I did not know that I was a senior member, but I guess I am because I have been reading these message boards daily for about 8 months or so. From reading these boards for this long, I think that I remember some people complaining about the Herculiner after they used it and that some of them wished that they had not used it. I think a lot of them were unhappy with the job that they did and this may be a good thing, but it was very difficult for them to remove. I am sure that if you took the time and did all of the correct prep work and you are completely satisfied with what you have done, then you will probably enjoy the Herculiner for quite some time. I think a lot of people in the past have also complained about the time that it took to do the prep work, not fully understanding the amount of time it takes to do. A lot of people would rather take the truck to a dealer somewhere and have the stuff srayed in by someone else. My brother does have the Rhino Liner and has since 98 or so. I think that his looks really good, but it is not perfect. I think there may be some spots that are torn up and I know that it has weathered a little bit. About the $35000 truck thing, I just threw a random number out there and was not meaning it as an insult. I have a 2002 FX4 that I believe I may have paid 30,700 for, so it sounds like you may be a little bit more of a wheeler/dealer than I am. Please accept my apologies and keep everyone up to date on your experiences with the Herculiner so that the rest of this community of F150 owners can decide whether or not it is worth their while to purchase and install.

You didn't but his response seemed so to me. KingScrewU as a third party you just struck back way to hard. All that aside, if you look at the bottom on the right hand side and put Herculiner in the search box you will come up with a lot of posts on the Herculiner. Irhogfan was right in saying a lot of people have had problems with it.

I have the herculiner on my truck. I have been happy with it. It does what it advertises. It will not look as smooth as the lineX or Rhino, but you didn't pay 350 for it either. Just pay close attention to the prep and taping. If you don't prep right it will peel. And tape off anything you you don't want it on. It took me about 8 hours to complete. So weight the pros and cons off it. Read the instructions on the can and get an idea of whats involved. You might find that the 350 price is not so bad.

Good Luck

IRHOGFAN Jeremy,

Sorry if my response was a bit out of proportion. Chalk it up to a bad day. I took your advice and did a search on Herculiner. What I found is exactly as you said, many people have had a bad experience. I'm hoping that theirs is due to a lack of proper preparation and maybe (like me) expecations that this product is comparable to Rhino and Line X.

In my case, I bought an extra quart and I only have a 5 1/2 ft bed so I'm hoping that the extra material and the drill driven paint stripper pad I used to prep the bed make the difference.

Here are the finished product pictures...I'll post more in six months to compare how it has weathered,

Thanks and sorry for the harsh reply.

Jerry

You did a great job on the application. It really looks professionally done. I am thinking about having my tow hooks done with something since they got scraped up when I was getting pulled out from being stuck in the mud (very embarrassing). Maybe I will look into this product; however, I am not sure that the cost of the full product will be worth it.

Irhogfan,

You can buy just a quart of the stuff for $25 instead of the whole kit. I would just use a brush and dab it on in multiple coats.

Good luck!

Good job! Cant wait to see the pics in 6 months. What state are you in? If it holds up I may use it on the top 6 inches of the out side of my boat. You know were the boat always hits the dock I was going to see how much the Line-X guy was going to get me for but if yours holds up I'll do it myself.

I can see with the prep work you put into it this will be a post to look at down the road.

I have had the herculiner in for about 3 yrs now. I have only touched it up once. When it starts to fade a little. Get some wheel shine and spray on it and it will look like new. This will improve the shine and help protect it for the UV rays.

Carmmond,

I'm in MD. Your idea about using it for the boat is a good one. There are so many times I've almost gone into Baltimore Harbour trying tet on the boat that I might try on the dock!

Thanks for the idea.

do it yourself bedliners

Kingscrewu, I would say that proper preperation is 90% of the battle. If you have done that I will doubt that you will be dissappointed. I used that cheap Walmart stuff in the back of a 87 Subaru Brat that I have been restoring for the past 5 1/2 years and when I finally applied the stuff a second time with proper sanding and washing the bed down with enamel reducer it has held tight for over 6 months, just yesterday my General foreman was looking at it and wanted to know how much it cost to have it sprayed HA HA. The first time I used it and was in a hurry trying to beat the dark, needless to say I was terriblely dissappointed. It started peeling up within a week and looked like crap. I had posted about the Rust oleuim bedliner with no response but went ahead and bought two gallions for my F-150 supercab, it is a two part rubber based epoxy and I hope to have it in with in a week or two. I have seen right many post from people who paid good money for sprayed in bedliners and were dissappointed, so this way at least we can only blame our selfs if not sattisfied and for less money.
