Thanks for confirming what the orange wire is.

I did order from the dealer. They went through engine size, year of truck, etc. and tried to sell me the wrong part number. Thanks to the pictures on this site, I knew it was wrong and had the guy check the VIN. After doing so, he was able to give me the correct part. Installation takes less than 5 minutes. I agree, it is frustrating having either full air or nothing.

98 f 150

Hi, any suggestions out there on how to replace the same part for a 98 F 150.
I looked behind the glove box but I was met with a wall of plastic. Not sure were to start on taking this out to get to part that needs to be replaced. Thanks for any suggestions and or pictures.

Thanks very much for the great fix. You saved me lotsa time and labor at the dealer......bought the part from my local Ford dealership and it was installed in a short period of time. And You are correct......the resistor IS the only thing that can cause this problem............The pics helped a TON in locating the part !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are tha MAN...........cheers : )

Thanks for the great posting - I changed my resistor last night and you photos and guidance helped! Part cost $22 and was in stock at the local dealer - your part number was different than what was on the one I removed but yours is the correct one.

I did have one advantage over you - I didn't have to work around the roll of charmin!

Can't hind it.

Ford is telling me on F150's with Auto Climate control, the blower motor resistor is located inside the motor housing by the control module.

I just replaced my blower motor resistor (06 XLT) and the problem is still there:

speed 1 works
speed 2 works
speed 3 (stays the same as 2)
speed 4 works

any thoughts?

btw: Autozone ordered the part for me; $22.

Jason,
My original factory resistor worked similarly to what you're describing; speeds 2 and 3 seemed the same.
It was after two speeds quit that I replaced the part. The new one has noticable differences between all the speeds.
Maybe you got a defective new one. I would show the manager of the store how you're fan speed control is working, and see if they'll order up another replacement.

Well, I was playing with the switch and I found if I wiggle it a little I can get the #3 speed to work, so I think it's definitely in the switch now.

Replaced my switch and it now works fine.

New guy here.........This write up is perfect....My dealer had the BMR for $26 and tax.....Ten minute replacement.....I would have started tearing the dash board apart if I didn't start here first....

Thanks! I just swapped my resistor too. I spent more time picking up the contents of my glove box when it dumped on the floor than I did changing the part. I wish all repairs were this easy - its only as difficult as changing a fuse. It was only $23 at my local Ford Dealer.

Just to add to help in diagnosing, when the BMR burns out all speeds below the break point no longer work. If the break is between position 1 and 2 then 1 does not work, but 2,3,4 do. Between 2 and 3, then 1,2 are dead, 3,4 work. Between 3 and 4, then 1,2,3 are dead and 4 works. 4 will always work no matter where the break is because that position bypasses the BMR and sends a full 12v direct to the blower motor.

Now if you have 1 or 2 positions in the middle that are dead or have no change in speed chances are its the switch not the BMR.

If all positions are dead, check the fuse or the blower fan motor itself.

Which one is it?

Hello all,
I'm a mom trying to help my 18 yr. old son learn some simple fix-its for his truck.
He has a 2006 Eddie Bauer Expedition. His heating/air fan only blows on high. I checked fuses and then checked online. Thank goodness for the internet!

I was thrilled to find this how-to with pictures, but it turns out his is an automatic vs. manual climate control system. I was all ready to take it apart and get a new resistor, but the inside looks a bit different.

I took a picture and am hoping someone would be kind enough to point out the resistor.
