Under Vehicle Lights

Hey All!

I am looking through my 2002 Ford Truck Accessories Book from FORD and they are listing a lighting kit as follow:

UNDERBODY SECURITY/VALET LIGHTING This security lighting system provides light to the underside of the vehicle and the surrounding area. The kit uses two powerful lights mounted under the vehicle that automatically light when the doors are manually unlocked, or remotely unlocked with a keyless entry key fob.
Available for F-150, F-150 Supercrew, F-SuperDuty and Ranger.

It lists in the book for $150, but the dealer has been doing me VERY WELL on any purchases from them.

My question is, does anyone have it?? How well does it work and/or how good does it look??

MOST IMPORTANT, Is the electrical hook-up as easy and plugging into a connector or is there some complex wiring. If anyone does have this system, where would I look on my truck for the connector to see if it is there????

It sounds like a nice mod, but like most people here, thought I would ask first!!!

THANKS ALL!!!!!

Joey "O"

Do a search because I know somebody in the community did it. I don't think he got the kit from the dealer though. You can do it yourself with a set of fog lights from the auto part store, some wire and a relay. I think he wired the underbody lights to a wire inside the cab, so whenever he disarms the alarm, the lights turn on. Very simple actually.

If you are mechanically inclined I sure you can do it for less than half the price.

I got the light kit from Ford .. I love it ! really helps out in a dark driveway or parking lot , I have the Screw so I got 2 sets so I would have a light under each door. you cannot see the lights or brackets except what shines on the ground and you only see that at night . they are alot like fog lights except not a clear lens so it difuses the light better and they are not glass lenses. I had a shop put them in for me $65 bucks . do a search on underbody lighting kit ... I posted a few times on the subject ... some others did it with fog lights . I think it's well worth it !

I did the mod.

Used ~$20 lights. Ran a wire from each light up into the holes in the frame, and into the cab through a rubber grommet that was there. How you mount the light is up to you. Just attach it to the frame.

If you remove the step-guard inside the cab, you will see the bundle of wires. Unfortunately I cannot remember which one. But one of them goes to the 3rd brake light over the bed. That light lights up when the doors are unlocked. You can remoce the light an verify the wire there. I tapped into this wire on both sides using "tap splices".

That's pretty much it.

Love it, wife loves it, and inexpensive!

I did the light mod too and connected it to the pulse coming from my aftermarket remote start/door lock via a time-delay relay. I mounted the lights facing UP on my running boards to light up the door openings. Lights were $20 and relay was $25. It provides some luminence but is merely just a fancy mod/signal that the remote activated. ennis

I didn't use 55 watt foglights. The ones I used are less than that, maybe 25 watts. So that is only 2 amps each.

Use the following formula.

watts
--------------------
volts | current (amps)

I haven't had any problems yet. And the lights are only on for about a minute at a time.

Your right. I didn't use the 3rd brake light. I used the bed light. It comes on when the doors are open or unlocked with the remote.

Sorry about the confusion.

I have some pictures somewhere. I just haven't got around to developing/scanning them in.

I was sondering now that some of you have had these underbody lights for awhile are you still excited about them as you were at first? Are they still great and you would do them again or are they just ok? Just wondering before I go to the effort. Thanks.

You said you used 25 watt lights, shaped like fog lights is that correct? Square, rectangular? Do you think that flexible rope light would work? Just a thought I had. Any improvements you would make? Thanks for the help. Oh yes, how much work was it, like maybe how long did it take? Thanks.

The lights might be 25watts, maybe less. They were just small cheaps lights that you might find on a tractor-trailer rig. They are "cone" shaped.

They don't turn "night into day" under the truck. But are bright enough to light the area under the doors. If I did it again, I would do it the same way.

Flexible rope lights may work. They would definately provide a unique look. nice idea.

As far as the work goes. It might take you 10 minutes to remove the door sills and physically put the lights on. To run the wire up and tap into the wires, 15 minutes.

There is one thing I can remember. The bed light wire runs to the bed on the drivers side. But I cannot remember which wire I tapped into on the passenger side. I think it used the same color scheme, but I 'm not sure.

Thanks for the information. The reason I thought of the rope light is that I have running boards and I though it might be easier to install under the boards instead of lights. I'm really going to think it over and maybe give it a go. I am also still looking for a red Ford Oval hitch plug by TM Maching if you ever see one. They are discontinued. Thanks again.
