Tail Light Lenses

Does anyone know how to remove the lens on a tail light? I have the 09-11 "yield-sign" tail light, and I wish to paint the trim black...

Ford uses PermaSeal on all of their light housings so it is a pain in the butt , but it is possible. A heat gun is great, but if you don't have access to one, an over @ 220* for 6-7 minutes works too. Be careful you don't crack them, the PermaSeal is a tough bond to break

Thanks for the responses. How do I re-apply the lenses? Heat up the exisiting sealent and re-apply? Do I need to add more sealent as well?

I've seen it done on the newer headlights, but haven't seen or read any successful threads on the taillights. I've only heard that it can't be done. I haven't tried myself, just going by what I've heard.
Good Luck and keep us posted!!

I've done PermaSeal lights and its possible just hard. And no, do not reuse the old stuff its not meant to be used like that. Heat it up, pry them apart and pull all the glue out. Use new silicon to reassemble the unit

I would try both oven, for a few minutes, then use a heat gun to pull it apart, could prevent lens deformation and help he process some.

I will honestly say that since I started selling custom lighting accessories last year I have tried to open several sets of 09+ tails and have many hours invested and ive came to the conclusion that they are melted together to form a seal and are next to impossible to open.

I've opened a couple. It possible, but a pain in the butt. Permaseal goes on like silicone, and hardens to a plastic-like bond. It is the last thing to warm up in the oven, so you have to be careful. Once its just a tad warm, it get pliable. I usually use two big flathead screwdrivers and brute force. I sometimes lose and end up cutting my fingers on something, but all in all, it takes me about 30 mins a piece to open

Maybe the lights I had were different. This stuff is not the same stuff that is used on 04-08 head lights, which has silicone qualities but is a huge pita to open. The 09+ tails I had felt like they put two pieces of plastic together and then heated a wire in the seam to melt them together. There is even pieces of melted plastic between them sometimes.
