Are retrofitted HIDs legal? I thought they had to come from the factory, ie OEM tested and approved, to be legal. There are plenty of things that we do to our trucks all the time that aren't exactly legal, look at tint, or cat deletes.

Being in CA that's probably a pretty good idea. I know you can get away with things over here, but I've heard they're a lot stricter out your way.

Would that still be necessary if using proper projectors? I see that as something you'd use if you're putting HID bulbs into a reflector housing, like the fogs. I had a pair of fog lights that had the tip painted with something or other to cut down on glare in the fogs when I was using the SilverStars (iirc).

It's all illegal unless OEM or CSA tested DOT approved. Some say retrofits are worse because you're changing a CSA tested light, not just adding bulbs.

No you don't need capping done if using projectors. Capping will just cut the glare down as you won't see the tip of the bulb.

You already knew this, it's just early.

But I really doubt a law enforcement officer will stop you for actually spending the time and money to keep other drivers and yourself safe by going the correct route with HIDs....

plus, you technically aren't changing the factory reflectors, because you are no longer using them for light reflection

I doubt it as well. I'm just saying they will not be CSA approved anymore. I'm not sure how state inspections are. Might just need a second pair of factory headlights if problems occur. No truck on the market has hid OEM headlights yet, so it's very easy to spot. :o

I have HID bulbs on my fogs AND have been pulled over because of my lights but only cause I didn't adjusted my left headlight and blinded the crap outta an officer but I'm sure if adjusted correctly no one would mind

yeah, which I find kind of hard to believe. I mean, they are noticeably better in certain aspects than halogens, but you would think as big as HIDs are becoming, both factory and not, that they would have put them in already....

what reason could they really have not to?
