PTM Questions

I love, love, love! PTM Trucks! I hate seeing these trucks with horrible fading black handles and cowls etc...

Well I wanna PTM my Handles on the truck. I also have kicked around the Idea of PTM my Running Boards with Line-X. So WHat is the best way to go about getting mine PTM? Going to a body shop or just oredering some FX4 luxury handles in my color-DSG??

Here's some pics love to hear what y'all think:

So what is the best way to do it? I wanna have it last and match pretty really well. But don't wanna spend an arm and leg. I want my cake and want to eat it too

I have been thinking ptm to. I was going to buy the chrome handles and mirror caps and ptm them, I figured that would be the cheapest way.

you can't buy already PTM handles from ford, only the Mark LT handles but they have the chrome pull strap, you can get the harley davidson door handles that are smooth and get them painted, or you can smooth the ones you already have and get them painted

So it would run me roughly $60 for Handles? Then copule bottles of paint? WHat else? Obviously sandpaper, paint, clear, and tape. Do I need adhesion promoter?

Here's the steps I used on mirrors

Blue Tape to mask off around painted section
Sand with 320 grit till smooth
Put a **** Load of newspaper to cover side of truck
2 coats of dark gray primer
Wet sand with 600 grit to remove any imperfections
3 coats of T299 Dark Shadow Gray (dupli-color)
3 Coats of Clear Coat (Dupli-Color)

Very similar with the handles.. sanded till my fingers hurt.. which they will... that chrome doesn't come off easily. you will have to take some time on it. I tried 3M Aircraft Grade Stripper, and that didnt do much. (Might if used after sanding.. idk)

Use "Light" coats with the paint and clear. By that I mean spray at one angle with a fairly quick sweep. Everything might not get covered.. then for next coat go at a different angle.. I think I used 4 coats on the handles.. hard to remember.. but you will be able to tell when it is close.

Here is the thread from my project Latest Project.. PTM

I just did mine along with a whole grille and it turned out great. I used products from automotivetouchup.com for paint and stuff, they color match factory paint codes perfectly.

My procedure was similar to Shanks:
Sand with 320, then 600
2 coats adhesion promoter
2 coats primer
wetsand with 600
clean well to remove sanding particles.
2 coats basecoat paint
3 coats clear
wait 24 hours, hit it with rubbing compound <-- optional, brings out the glossyness

I too used different angles. Quick sweep from one side, then quick sweep from other side (so 2 quick sweeps = 1 coat) since the handle buckets are pretty steep. The more time you take and put into it, the better your results will be. Simple as that, so dont rush it. Its really very easy though! Find something else that you can do simultaneously between painting coats as well, will make time go faster.

That website I listed has a video of this procedure, nothing short of holding your hand through the whole thing. Very helpful.

Well I am definitely doing these myself for sure now. I talked to Tasca they are $95.15 a handle so $475.75 for all 5 handles

Will being doing the steps above. I got the paint just need the handles. I got 2 bottles of DSG Dupli Color Paint 1 bottle of Adhesion Promoter and 2-3 bottles of primer so I think all i need now is the handles
