Painted License Plate?????

Maybe someone can help me out here... is it legal to paint a license plate as long as it contains all the information? I really want to paint my plate black but include all of the numbers, state, and stuff in white and still keep the stickers on it. I know I can make a decal with all necessary information to use as a mask over the white and throw some black and clear coat over that, the only problem is that I don't know if it's legal or not. I've searched all over the net to find out but nothing relevant pops up. I plan on using my original plate just wondering if it can be altered profusely but still include all the proper information.

You don't need to search the internet for this one, call your local DMV or highway patrol, but I suspect it's incredibly illegal. In Texas, where for years license plates were only black letters/numbers on a white background and then the opposite, some college fans took to placing small UT longhorn, TA&M and other school logos on their plates. Many got pulled over and ticketed. Generally defacing a plate in any manner is illegal. Texas has since come into the 20th century.

that option would seem like a reason to get pulled over in any state...

I've always thought about getting some PTM spray paint and painting an old set.
You know in the car commercials, the plates always are PTM?
Super illegal, but for shows and photo-shoots.

i always noticed that in car commercials and thought it looked cool but wondered why they even put a tag on the car in the commercial anyway.
