i wouldn't use niteshades, that stuff can be really watery to apply.
i didn't understand what you were going for before you posted a picture, but i think that i get it now. since your wanting to tint the plastic cover, i see no reason why window tint wouldn't work. seeing as you need such a small amount, why not go to a place that tints windows and ask for a small scrap piece. every once in a while someone will come in my shop and ask for a small piece, and as long as it's too small to do a window i have no problem with just giving it to them. btw, i'd try %35. that should kill the light without making it impossible to read.
post pics if you do it, i'm curious what it's gonna look like.

i've tried window tint, well i took it to a buddy who works at the big tint place here in town and he said he couldnt do it with out heating up the tint, and he didnt want to do it and end up warping the plactic... i just got a new piece from ford, only 23 bucks... and i orderd some niteshades and gunna try that... and if that dont work, i can always remove the pain and try something elce.. i know im tring something diffrent, so its all trial and error..
Something you might consider, the reason he would have to heat the tint is to make it conform to the curve of the plastic. You can paint the outer lip (near the edges) black since there is nothing to see behind that part and tint only the inner portion (that is less curved. That way you could probably use a hair dryer to get the bubbles out of the tint and making it a lot easier. I did this on a lens for a digital dash I used in my 70 F100. If you use niteshades it may come out cloudy.

i just really don't like the idea of using nite shades on that. too runny for it to look good with out it being way too dark.
good luck with whatever you end up doing; and be sure to post pics!
