9140 Fog conversion to 9005 or H10?

Hello everyone!

I upgraded to the PIAA H13 bulb (extreme white plus) and like the output. I would like to do the fogs, but PIAA doesn't make a 9140 match. I searched here, but no dice. I thought I read where a 9005 bulb would go right into the fog socket? Can anyone confirm? I also read where an H10 is the same? I would like to have the same type bulb in the fogs, but dont want the lens to melt like some have reported.

Any help would be appreciated.

All you need to do is look inside the foglight bulb where the plug goes, there is either 1 tab or 2 tabs that correspond to the plug. Buy a bulb that has the correct tabs for your truck. Im running 9006s in my fogs.

No issue with heat on the fog lamp lens? I would assume we would have the same bulb (factory 9145's) as the 09's are still using the round fogs.

Thanks for the info.

Yes with the round fogs, some that have used the 9005 have had problems with heat. Basically melting or discoloring the lens.

what year is your truck ? according to your info you have an 06 ?

im pretty sure for 9140 you can use either H10 or 9005 which is a high beam.

i ve read ppl who have used the 9005 in the smaller 06-08 fogs , lenses have "melted".

unless you have an 04-05 i would go with the H10's

Thats pretty much the info i have gathered.
The 9005s fit but they are a higher wattage i think, so they burn hotter and result in melted lenses.

No, I have an 09. But they still use the round fogs. I am unsure whether to get the 9005's or 9006's.

I'll change my info now - thanks for the heads up!

Please remember it's recommended to have 1/2 and inch of clearance between the tip of HID and the reflector or the projector lens. Also make sure the HID bulb is not touching anything inside the light housing.
9140 bulb size is aka H10. 9005 is pretty similar to 9140 (aka H10) but it's not the exact fit. I would suggest you to use the exact bulb size as used in your fogs.

I swapped my fogs (9140's) for 9145's, which apparently are the same. But I believe 9145's are normally higher wattage? The stock bulbs were 37 watts and the new ones were either 42 or 45...
Either way the 9145 or h10 is normally easier to find replacements for instead of looking for 9140's.
For what it's worth, the bulbs I'm referring to are silverstars, running them in headlights and fog lights. I also ordered Nokya 2500K (yellow) 9145 fog lights bulbs. I like the silverstars but sometimes they don't work as well in the rain, so I'm curious how the yellow works out.

I almost got the Piaa 9005's (Extreme White Plus) white didn't want the lens fiasco to happen. I did see the SilverStar 9145ST's at Auto Zone, so I may give those a try. Now the Piaa H13's in the headlamps are great - just trying to mirror the light color.

If I can't get what I want, I may try the HID's that XenonLink has to offer, but don't know about the cost. Another user posted a thread that they will offer a discount for F150online.com users. I just don't want the trouble of bulbs going bad, moisture, etc.

old thread but needs to be bumped.

i have tried 9145 & h10 replacement bulbs and they melt 06-present housings. at the very least, they leave cracks on the lense right where the light output is.

im talking silverstars, piaa's, crappy autozone specials, any brand, you name it.

does ANYONE know where you can get aftermarket 9140's?

the only thing i've seen that dont melt the lense are 35w HID's. but the housing is not set up for hids and the glare is too much for me to deal with

That's kind of odd. 9145s only put out 5W more than the 9140s. I've heard of the 9005s melting the NBS housings, but not 9145. Are your lenses lexan or glass?
