Changing mirrors

Hey everyone,

So my next mod is going to be getting rid of the "bunny ear" mirrors on my STX and replacing with some stylish XLT/FX4 mirrors.

I did some searching but only came up with a bunch of threads asking if it were possible or threads that were looking at the power mirrors, ect.

So I've got a few quick questions:

1.) Are XLT mirrors the stylish ones? Or only FX4? I don't need all the fancy turn signals/heat/power fold, ect.

2.) Anyone have a write up on whats involved with the removal and installation?

3.) Wheres the best place to get them? E-bay?

Thanks for your time!

if it's like the Expedition (should be very similar) follow this steps, I used them when switching my mirrors for navigator mirrors, the install went smooth and fast only took like an hour to install both. You should get some with PTM mirror caps, so when you get them painted get the door & tailgates handles PTM'ed

Tools required: phillips-head screwdriver, "star?"-head screwdriver, deep socket set (metric)

You must remove the entire door panel on the inside of the passenger door to get access to the nuts for the mirror assembly:

1. remove the one screw on the side of the door panel, and the two screws at the bottom of the panel.
2. pry off the long, thin strip in the center of the door panel below the door handle. Remove the "star" screws.
3. Pry off the cover around the inside door handle.
4. Pry off the button assembly (for controlling the window and door locks). Unplug the 2 connectors attached to the assembly.
5. Remove the door panel by pulling up and then out.
6. Peel off a little bit of the insulation on the inside of the door where the mirror assembly is located to gain access to the nuts and the electrical connector for the mirror.
7. Disconnect the electrical connector.
8. Using a deep socket (Metric 11), unscrew the 3 nuts holding the mirror assembly to the door. Remove the mirror assembly.
9. Install the new mirror assembly. Route the power cable through the hole and connect the electrical connector. You may want to tape the power cord down so it does not rattle. Screw the 3 nuts to the mirror assembly - make sure they are tight but don't overtighten otherwise the screw will break off from the assembly.
10. put the insulation back against the inside of the door.
11. put the door panel back on by pushing it in and then down.
12. Attach the door panel to the door by reversing steps 1 through 4.

1) IF by stylish you mean the big square fold away mirrors then yes.
There are actually quite a number of different sets/partnumbers.
The basic mirror is the same for all xlt and up trim levels, its the options that vary.

all fold away mirrors will be power. the only manuals are the ones you already have.
there are then the following options, led turns, heated mirror, step lights/puddle lamps, auto folding, and the fx2 newer style mirrors with the PTM caps.

Your best bet (since you dont want any options) would be just to find the xlt power mirrors. they are the most basic, with the only option being power.
If you want them painted you can sand the upper cap and have that painted like the new fx2s or you can just buy a fx2 style mirror. I personally picked up a spare set of regular xlt power mirrors for right around $100 on ebay. Since you arent in a hurry to replace them (ie no broken mirrors) check around parts places or ebay. They are always on there.
I have had my fair share of mirror delimas, and i recently retrofitted the expy navi mirrors on my f150. I sold my ebay set to a guy with an sxt and he loved them. (i ptm them for him though)
heres a link to my thread, dont know how much help that will be though.
Mirror thread

2) they are very easy to get out and in, the door panel is probably trickier then the mirrors themselves. check the link posted and if you have any problems Pm or email me and ill be happy to help you out.

3) already discussed in 1)

One of my XLT mirrors got knocked off one day so I got one of ebay for like 60 bucks. If you can find a deal on there then that is the way to go because they will be a fortune at the dealer. Also very easy to put on yourself, but putting the panels back on can be a little tricky.

That's so true! One time I knocked off my driver side mirror. The dealer charged me around $500 for replacing, parts, and labor
