Exclamation HELP! LED LIGHTS WIG WAG etc... ANYONE!!!!

I need a little help.... I have recently bought an LED tailgate strip for my truck. I purchased a flasher also. The LED unit is designed for plug-and-play with trailer wiring. (Left turn, right turn, flashers, and reverse.) I purchased a wig-wag flasher with multiple patterns to operate it (I will hard wire the unit.) Now... to my question... Since this unit is LED, will a 12v wig-wag flasher operate an LED strip that is designed to run on 12v, and if I buy more led units, will it operate on the same flasher. I am figuring that the wig-wag flasher is high current (considering it is designed to run High-beams,) so an led light would be minuscule compared to Halogen bulbs. My only issue is compatibility... will it work? Thanks for any input. -Gunk

wig wags are designed for headlights, not LED light strips. it will probably work but will flash really fast and probably not in the pattern you want. i just took my wig wag off my headlights because i got HIDs

I'm sure it will. But think of how fast it will flash with such a low draw. If you replace the stock tails with LED the unit goes crazy fast because of the low draw. If you put on a intensely high powered flasher on a low draw LED, it would seem crazy. Although I was thinking the same thing a few days ago, maybe someone will make one designed to run LEDs or maybe someone already has (Whelen has many LED emergency lights, so they have the hardware already)

BTW, anyone know how to pronounce them? My friend says "Way-len" but I say "Wee-lin"

its pronounced wheelin. and the wig wag wont work well with the LEDs unless it was set up to work with an LED system.

Right on, Alex wins $5!

Does Whelen sell any LED wig-wag systems? My whole rear-end will be LEDS come summer time

Should Have Said.........

I should have included the fact that it is a solid state flasher, I believe that should have some sort of a difference. I understand that if it was relays on timers, it would cause an undesired speed, but I was hoping that with a solid state wig-wag it would work... I just thought of something... I may just add my high beams to it, that would get rid of any current issues I have, and The leds wont add anything significant.... I was just wondering if anyone has tried this.... Thanks for the responses!

PS... The reason I did not purchase an LED flasher, was because I was worried that the LED worked on low-voltage, and the LINE OF FIRE unit is operated at twelve volts, probably shouldn't have thought so much... They probably all run on 12... as a standard... But I just DONT KNOW! ARGHHH!

It should work just fine, a 12volt load is a 12volt load to those flashers... they have no fast flash designed into them to change the flash pattern if load drops below a certain amperage, i.e. if a bulb was out or you were using leds instead of halogen etc. I used a flasher designed and sold for headlight flashing to alternate my old grill lights pre-led, because it had a cool alternating four different flash cycle. Everything worked fine and it would with led too.

Amend my previous statement to say that the flasher will work as long as the leds are made for 12volt applications - most you buy commercially, i.e. Whelen, ShoMe, etc, are all 12 volt ready. Put anything else on it, like some bare leds you buy from Radio Shack etc and you'll burn them out in no time without resistors.

you can also try this and it`s a cheap try($17.99)....I have ordered one to convert my Cargo Lights into "Wig-Wag`s" it`s a Wig-wag flasher designed for "LED`s"..I plan on installing LED bulbs in place of my white cargo lights and bypassing the interior feed..don`t really need cargo light. here is the link scroll down a bit

looks good, i think that would look perfect for some blue or red LEDs hidden away in the grille somewheres on a seperate switch in the cab. def added to my "to get" list.

Edit: Post #1,000, w00t!! x1000 all 'round!
