Painting Stock Handles and Buckets

For those of you who have painted or had your stock handles painted what did you do?

Were they sanded smooth and then painted to get rid of texture?

Were they sprayed several times and then clearcoated?

Anyone just have them painted to match but still have the texture in them?

Any comments/recommendations/experience with this would be appreciated.

My local paint shop just wants to paint over them and clear coat them, but I know the texture will still be there and not sure how its going to look.

Thanks.

I didn't paint them myself, I had them painted. They sanded them down smooth before painting them. They feel just like a regular painted handle when compared to an FX2 and look just like them best as I can tell. I parked my truck right next to a new white FX2 at a Ford dealer and compared them for several minutes. They looked pretty identical.

I have no idea how many coats they did.

I would certainly recommend sanding them down before painting them.

Here's a pic of mine.

I painted mine myself about 2 years ago. I took them off the sheet metal and sanded most of the texture off. I then used a plastic primer, painted with several coats of my truck color and clear-coated with 2 more coats. They turned out nice and are holding up well.

Jeremy, I'm looking at doing the same thing (handles and mirrors). How much did it cost you? Thanks

Looks elegant. What grit would you use and how do you get the power mirrors off? Also what did you pay? Thanks

Awesome truck, JeremyGSU... i have the same color scheme and have been wanting to paint my handles as well. Looks great. Do you have the smoked headlights on yours? If so, would you mind taking a picture or two head-on and posting? Been thinking about doing the same, but curious as to how it would look on a white truck... thanks.

I have the Harley black lights, not smoked FX2. I'm also rolling on OEM 20's now but don't have new pics yet.

i have painted some OE plastic parts without first sanding off the texture and was very disappointed. it really looked half-a**. in fact, i went back and sanded off the clearcoat, paint, primer and adhesion promoter just to make the things smooth!! do it right the first time (sand off the texture) or you'll be dissappointed.
