Blue Dots on Tail Lights
What's up everyone? I have been thinking about installing some blue dots on my tail lights the way old cars have them on.
My question, is are these illegal in CA? I would hate to put them on, and get cited for them. Then I would have to buy new tail-lamps.
Thanks

I would say don't do it...the color of lamps and reflectors in the State of California is standardized under Vehicle Code section 25950; blue is not one of the authorized colors. Not only are the blue dots illegal, they are hazardous because they change the color of the light passing through the lens to a purple or violet color which is, again, illegal. So, if you want to give an officer good probable cause to stop you, go ahead and put on the blue dots...I would recommend against it though.
Same goes for front license plates...keep them on in California or you will be in violation of CVC 5200 which, again, gives officers a free excuse to stop you. Believe me, equipment violations do stand up in court as a reason to stop.

I think blue dots would be VERY cool. I'd take a chance.
Ya, it may be probable cause to stop someone, but surely ("Don't call me Shirley") there are better reasons to harass a citizen.

I agree with Marv1, other than some different numbers, it's the same way here in Pa, and we don't have front plates. Even pass the Probable cause issue, it's not worth the chance of paying a citation for them, and now when you take them out to fix them you have big holes in your tail lenses, which will cost you more money......suggestion, don't do it, but to each his own, hell ptu em' on...JOB SECURITY..Ha Ha Ha,
And I think Shifter is just jealous I/we get to stop (NOT HARASS) "citizens"...LOLOL ;-)

I'm not jealous, 1. I know police don't go out of their way to harass citizens. I also know that a lot of them would rather not have to deal with little issues that have no victims and that cost them good will.
I work with police officers all the time as an automotive reporter. Here's one of my articles that officers from two forces helped me on. http://www.ottawacitizen.com/wheels/000303/3692707.html

I say don't do it. Not only is it illegal, it's also very annoying and ugly (in my opinion). The thing that really gets me is people don't seem to realize it is illegal to have blue lights on your vehicle. I see a lot of people with blue turn signals, blue "tail light" dots, blue neon strips, blue "super-white" headlights, etc. It just makes me hope and pray they get pulled over. I'm all for customizing your vehicle, but keep it legal. We have those laws for a reason, it's not your place to decide which laws you want to follow and which ones you want to break.

I am so glad I moved to GA years ago. Coming from Ohio they would pull you over for anything so they could make a buck or two. The blue dots will change the filtered light from red to purple, not blue. I think in every state it is illegal to have blue light emitting from any vehicle other than law enforcement.

They are about 1/2" round plastic and fit into a hole drilled into the taillight. Lots of old hot rods have them, they were big in the 50's. They are blue, and give your taillights a pink/purple hue. You've probably seen them but didn't know what they were.

Frank S,
AMEN! I can't wait to get back to GA! The Army moved me out here to the "Peoples Republic of California" or as I like to call it "Commiefornia". You wouldn't believe the crazy crap they deal you out here. I'm a stand up, law abiding citizen. Moreover, I'm a member of the protecting force which gives this CHP drip the freedom to stop me and he has the ***** to pull me over because I have the GA state flag on the front of my truck! (Which is registered in GA by the way!) Get your hand off my door you Commie bastard! CHP officers have WAY to much power to screw you over out here. I'll be glad when I'm back in GA and my law enforcement officers are PROTECTING me, not OUT for me!
KEEP IT FLYING!

onemilmhz, you're right in the CHP has a lot of power. I don't know if this is the case with other states' highway patrol, but the CHP has supreme power. A CHP officer can give anyone a ticket anywhere in the state of California for doing anything wrong. I like to think of them as God. They can give you a ticket for fishing without a license. I mean what does that have to do with "highway patrol"? There are a few exceptions I think. I don't think CHP have jurisdiction of Indian Reservations (federal land), or possibly other limited areas such as airports (controlled by customs) and embassies. But for the most part, they are God.

I wouldn't do it. Even though I think they look cool the way I understand it in CA is that blue lights/lenses are for law enforcement only. Although most cops won't bother you unless your asking for it, it sure does give them a reason to stop you. Plus if I heard right, fix-it tickets are no longer free. This means that you not only have to replace the lens (which you would think is enough) now there is a fee on top of it. Kinda like going to traffic school for a ticket. Now you have to pay for the school and also pay the normal fee. The only thing traffic school does for you is keep your driving record clean for insurance purpose (in most people's case). I should really talk because my front lic. plate has a smoked cover on it. I know it's a reason for them to stop me but you can bearly see it and all I would have to do is take it off (and pay a fee (:-P) ).
