Thumbs up

Here's another 'thumbs-up' for the Lund Interceptor. I installed it in about 10 minutes and it looks, and hopefully works, great!

Question

Does anyone know anything about Lund's new Trident wrap bug shield? It's advertised on their website (http://www.lundlook.com). The description mentions the following items:

* Ultimate protection for hood, fenders, and windshield
* Full height, wrap-around design
* Guaranteed Unbreakable under normal use
* Up to 55% thicker than other shields
* Easy NO-DRILL mechanical fastening system
* Exclusive Quad Airflow Vents accelerate airflow over thee windshield
* Stands away from hood for easy cleaning
* Available in smoke or paintable clear.
* Limited lifetime warranty.

I've got a SuperCrew on order (only one more month) and I'm trying to decide which bug shield I want. Basically I want something that's easy to clean behind, doesn't touch the hood (no 3M pads or rubber *****), yet is fairly low profile.

I've been leaning towards the Lund Interceptor, but I was curious if anyone had purchased the new Lund Trident bug shield. How does it compare to the Interceptor?

The Perfect BugShield? Not Ventshades "BugFlector 2. Why you ask... 800 miles on my brand new truck... 300 of 'em with the bugflector 2. I go to look in the engine compartment (still got the new truck happy happy's) and what do I see... The top of the painted grill surround being rubbed raw in 6 places. Clearcoat gone in 6 1" x 1/16" strips along the top..., but mostly rubbed out with not toooo much visible damage remaining, except for the 1/8 inch circle on the drivers side that is rubbed clear through to the plastic below. I think "this sucks," I check the install, it's on right and tight... I remove it, rub out what I can, close the hood, and realize the damage is visible from outside... Hood doesn't hide it. S*&t, says I... Oh well... Can't find the freaking receipt either... Guess it's $40 down the drain. I further surmise ya' get what you pay for. Cheap lesson all-in-all. I can touch up the truck and won't even notice (with some small mental control on my part) but it still pisses me off... Least I got the damn thing off before I had to replace the surround or have it painted. Just thought I'd let you all know of my experience. Only reason I went with it cause the prior one on the 97 fit well and didn't hurt anything. Guess you live and learn. And I guess I got the first "My bad" boo-boo outta the way so it should be smooth, trouble free, damage free sailing from here on out, right?... RIGHT?

*Sheesh*

Just put the factory bug deflector/hood protector on my '98 Expy. Also added the rear air deflector.

Factory instructions require the bumps to be fastened to the hood. I would think if on the deflector would certainly rub through the paint from flexing.

By the way, anyone have a source for the rthreaded inserts used to mount the rear air deflector. I'd like to have a few of those around for attaching other stuff. they fit into a 13/32 hole and work sort of like a molly bolt. you compress them and they collapse to clamp against the hole and fill it. Local ford rep says they have no source. Anyone know who makes the factory air deflector for ford?

Ransome123, I take it you did not install the little rubber bump stops that came with it? I put them on the surround, not the bug shield, still looks good with no rubbing.

I installed the stops and extra's on the truck... Not the shield. The shield didn't hit the hood at all... It hit the top of the painted grill surround below the hood. The shield extended too far down and out of the hood and didn't have enough clearance gap between the bottom edge of the hood and the top of the grill surround (does that make sense?). I found the receipt also... The box upon closer examination had a new "application" sticker placed over the old. the old one said 97-99 Ford F-150... The new one said 97-2000 F-150. The receipt showed one 97-99 bugshield. Perhaps there is a slight difference in the 99-2000 set up? Who knows. Least I got my dough back... Gonna go with the Ford one now.

Yea, I understood what you meant, it made sense. When I installed mine I looked at it close and there was no way it would bend back and hit the hood. Then I looked at the bottom and it was resting on the grill surround (painted area under the front of the hood), so that's where I put the little rubber stops. I don't think the instructions were really clear where they should go. Sorry I couldn't have let you know sooner, before it rubbed your paint.

Question

I'm still decided on which deflector. Am leaning towards either Lund Interceptor or X-Terminator, but dealer also mounts a PrimeDesign. Like the wrap-around look and seems sturdier than most, but has raised plastic bumpers on back of shield that look to me to cause potential damage with prolonged wind resistance. Have not seen anyone using or recommending these on message boards. They are also pricier because they're through the dealer.
