I ordered the Bugflector II in clear and spray painted the back of it bright red, the same color as my truck. Very sleek looking and best of all it doesn't give the front of the truck a cluttered look. From a distance you can't even tell it's there.

After a lot of looking around I got the Ford bug shield. I wanted the low profile look but I also wanted to be able to clean behind it. It worked out great. You might wanna make sure to get one with drain holes.

Thumbs down

Don't expect the bug deflector to deflect bugs, its purely for show. I just took an hour and half drive on the Interstate to get Lottery Tickets for the $350 Million Big Game ,because, they don't sell tickets in this dam state, but, anyway I could not even see through the windshield with all the bugs smashed and smeared all over including the deflector. The deflector was totally useless for deflecting bugs. None of them work at all, strictly for show only!!!!!

Wink

Bug deflectors are not for the windshield for most purposes. They are to keep bugs, small rocks, etc. from hitting the front nose and the hood of the truck. I expected bugs to hit the windshield more (haven't experienced it yet though). But I got tired of the scratches and small marks on the front and top of the hood. I also like the look too.

I95 and Bubbatime:

The place I bought my Lund Interceptor from calls them "hood protectors" and I believe that is the actual purpose of them. Bug deflector is a carried over generic term that won't die in most places. Kinda like asking for a "coke" instead of a cola.

I have the deflecta-shield. It looks good but the bump-stops are a pain to clean past. It is also starting to look a little rough. To be fair, it is 4 years old.
SELVA1 - NICE TRUCK!!! Mine is 1997 Black Super Cab Flareside. I have the same ORP 17" wheels that yours has. I painted the directional ovals on the wheels black to match the paint on the truck and get a lot of positive comments from sport truck owners. If you look close you will see the wheels are painted inside the ovals anyway and this was real easy and looks good. I will post some pictures soon.

Just installed a Lund Intercepter. 5 min. to install and no need for those little rubber bumpers. Stays away from the hood and uses the factory holes. I think I will add a few screws to stiffen it up a little.

I just added the Lund X-Terminator. It goes in the factory holes and comes with the little bumpers. Instead of gluing them to the hood, I stuck them on the bug deflector. I also changed out the plastic screws with stainless steel screws.

On my old deflector the screws stripped very easily and the bumpers were hell to get off the hood. I still have little circles from where they were.

Triton46,

FYI: I have had friends that have put the little bumpers on the shield as well, and they kept the shield away from the hood, but they rubbed the paint off the hood as well.

Question

ren,

Really!?!? My brother just got a new Explorer and they now put the bumpers on the shield. I was kinda worried about that happening but only seems possible if youre in a highly windy situation (constantly pushing the bug shield back and forth).

Did your friends find a resolution? Just wondering and thanks for the heads up.

Tritan46:

My dad had his bug shield installed at the dealer when he bought his last truck (92 Ford). They put the rubber bumps on the shield... They completely wore through the paint down to bare metal in the span of a few years... Many bugshields flex alot and at highway speeds the air pushing against the shield can force it back into the hood. The rubber bumpers may be less abrasive than the plexi but the end result will be same; it'll just take longer. Perhaps not all shields flex so much but i've yet to see one that didn't flex some at speed. The shields with the small kickup at the top seem especially prone to greater flex from their more serious attempt to deflect the air upwards (if that made sense? ) Anyway... Just my experience.

Thats not good, seems like there is no middle ground here. Stick them to the hood or stick them to the shield...end result mess up the paint.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to prevent this? Maybe some small stickers made from plastic (you know like the white plastic wrap stuck to the hood during transport) where the bumpers will rest on the hood.

Cool

Get a shield without them. It will probably stand off the hood a little further. Another alternative is to apply a small square of 3M clear tape on the hood under where the bumpers would touch.
