Opinions on budget sony zr704 amp

I can get this amp for $98 Canadian w/ free shipping.
Bottom line is it worth it? I really don't want to spend anymore than this, I was going to look at used amps for $50-$75 to power a small sub (after being convinced by the people on here, thanks).
Sony Xplod ZR Series 4/3/2 Channel Car Amplifier (XMZR704)

I have Pioneer d series 720 components installed with a Punch 150a2 amp (37w rms) which I am very happy with. Will this sony be any better or worse for SQ?

Reason I am looking at this amp is that it will provide me with a second option for either powering my fronts and/or a new sub (looking at Msall's recommendation of the ED E3.6)

sale ends tonight so any feedback would be great, cheers

Ended up buying one and hooked it up yesterday. Sounds the same as my Fosgate punch 150. I am now looking to put my punch on an 8 inch sub.
Looking for cheap 8" subs now so recommendations are appreciated.
Elemental E3.8 good/cheap sub? or the infinity reference 8" ?

Where are you putting this sub? Under a seat?

I'll throw out a couple 8" subs that I personally like.

ED 9kv.2, ID 8v3, Sundown E8, JBL GTO8, or if you want something loud then SoundSplinter RLi-8.

The JBL sub is a good option for you because its not very expensive, has great sound quality and is pretty efficient so it will do well on little amounts of power.

Marc, I feel ya, but he said cheap, and he just bought a Sony amp, so I think he's serious ha.

Kicker C84

Rockford Fosgate P1S48

Kinda weird looking around for 8" subs...many are more expensive than the 10's in their same line.

I was serious too

Low power handling and very high efficiency. Perfect for a low powered budget application.

Thanks guys, I know the sony amp is not top shelf but I am seriously looking to keep this cheap. So far I have spent $150 on the pioneer d series 6.75" components, $80 on my used fosgate punch amp, $40 on wires, and now $110 on the sony amp (all in Cdn dollars) so I feel like I have done ok and the wife doesn't really notice. I am very pleased so far.

So if I can build a box and get a cheap sub for around the $120 mark then I will be around the $500 mark.

One more question, I was comparing the printed statistics on the JBL and compared them to the Infinity reference 8". On paper they appear very similar, can anyone comment on how they sound? Reason I ask is that the local future shop carries the infinity and it comes on sale for $75 cdn so it is easily accessible for me. The JBL on the other hand will force me to order and get F#$%#ck at the border.

All the comments/help is appreciated.

edit: looks like harmon owns JBL and Infinity, maybe why their 8" subs are so similar?

I have had one Infinity Reference 10" and two Infinity Kappa 10", and I have nothing but good things to say about Infinity.

Thanks Chris. Is 150 watts RMS of pure Sony power going to be enough for the infiinty or JBL to sound ok? Both those subs are rated at 91db so they are (at least on paper) fairly efficient.

I have my little fosgate punch 150a2 that I can bridge for 150 watts rms too for the sub.

Either one will do well off of 150 watts. Pick whichever one you like better, or if one is much cheaper than the other than go with the cheaper one. Efficiency will help you here.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Is there any benefit in using 2 amps in my basic setup? I can run everything off of my sony if I want but am I going to achieve slightly better SQ by using my amps separately?

I would definitely let the Sony do all the work with the sub, if you make it do it all you're just taking power away from the hungriest component, the sub.
