Mounting Amps under seats vs behind rear seat on SCrew?
I'm going to be adding amps to my 08 SCrew and was wondering where the best location was: behind the rear seats or under the front seats?
My concerns are about space and overheating/shuting down. Is there a thermal overload issue when mounted behind the rear seat? It gets up to 115 here in the summer at times, and that isn't accounting for sitting in the heat all day too.
Under the seat seems natural, but then it would seem to block the rear heater vent that is under there. Does this vent reduce space? does it cause overheating? Can you still feel heat in the winter over/around the amp?
For those going under the seat, or the seat back, what should the max height/thickness of the amp be?
Sound wise I'm not looking for competition. I just want a nice, full, detailed, sound that has solid bass and can be heard clearly when the windows are down, doing 70 on the freeway passing semi's. I don't mean 'drowing out the wind/road/semi noise'. I mean hear it through all of that VERY clearly.
I have that setup in my Dakota and had it in my Civic. I'm not big on hip-hop or R&B, but everything else is fair game.
Thanks for the info you can give.

I mounted my amps under the seats in my supercrew. I have a Alpine MRP-F450 on the doors (powering Hertz HSK165's up front & HCX570's in the rear) and a MRP-M1000 on my sub (RE SX 10 @ 2ohm). Everything clears for the most part but the airbag sensors that are under the seats do rest on the top of the amps. I recon you have about 2 3/8 worth of height to deal with.
Both amps get extremely hot when I push the system. Although the 450 usually runs too hot to touch, it has yet to shut down on me in 2 years. The 1000 gets just as hot, at which point it tends to greatly reduce output till it cools down. It has never completely shut off though. My old 600 watt MRP sub amp stayed very cool in the same space, so maybe the smaller class D guys wont overheat and have to limit themselves.
As far as which space is "better", its really personal preference and dependent on how large your amps are. My big MRP is 15-5/8"W x 2-3/8"H x 9-9/16"D, and it is pretty much even with the back of the seat when the seat is pushed all the way back. Anything bigger than that and maybe behind the rear seats is the better option since there's a lot more space. I would be concerned with airflow back there more so than under the seats, but I guess a lot of people haven't had any problems. I have not had any problems with the heat vents either. If your amps have any kind of lights on em, then they will look kinda cool lit up under the seats.

Look you are all good going behind the seat. I put an old KKR KX1200.1 @ 1/2ohm back there. The customer runs the everloving **** out of it 24/7. Never went thermal yet and its been months. (I actually just got my other installers drill back from him last week, I lost it and have been through 2 drills trying to take its place...

I installed mine under the seat and I'm cool with it. I think either way you go will be fine. I wasn't cool with drilling on that back wall so I didnt go that route but plenty of people have. I have an Alpine MRP something. I forgot what number it is.

I like the set up. I too have been debating where to put my amp. I will be going with an MRP-F250 to power my Infinity Reference and Kappa's with my CDA-9883 head unit. I do like the idea of behind the seat as it is obviously less prone to kids kicking something in to it and if a thief can't see it, he can't steal it. Unless of course they take the truck.

Behind the seat is now my decision as I have seen many people go this route.

I had an amp on the floor of my last truck and accidentally spilt a bottle of water on the floor and got so scared it was going to get to the amp. I know spills so not happen often, but my amp will go on the back wall when it goes into this truck.
what the hell are you going to push with all those amps???? I have a Rockford Fosgate BD1000 and everybody I talked to told me that there is not enough cab space to use all the power in that one amp... you got three amps??????????
