Could you share why you went with 5.0 vs the 3.5? I have driven both for over 100 miles and I'm still having a heck of a time deciding... thought I'd organize some thoughts to help others too. I'd be happy with either, it's fun to split hairs though... Here's my list on what sticks out for both choices.

5.0 - Engine sound, exhaust sound, smoother driving experience especially 10-40mph, $1,000 less than 3.5
3.5 - More car like drive (for better or worse), auto stop/start is slightly less annoying/less noticeable than the 5.0, little more seat of the pants torque "wow" fun factor when punching it. Driving or towing at elevation isn't a factor for me in Northern IL and WI, only about 1000' to where I go.

I've read a little about towing mileage being better with 5.0? How about real world highway mileage 70-77mph?

Neither is bad and depending on what you are towing both should do a fine job.

As far as actually towing mileage they are about the same. I've seen one actual controlled test in the older Gen 1 engines with the 6 speed. In that test the EB got about 1 mpg better. All of the other crap on the internet is highly suspect, it was probably written by the same guys that were getting 30+ from an old Cummins.

 

Waiting for my 18 KR to be delivered in 25 days the reason i went with the 5.0. Is they are putting Turbos on a v6 to get it to work like a v8 Im old school nothing like a v8 . I dont want to be replacing turbos down the road. I like the reliability of the 8. I have done a lot of research and i narrowed it down the v8 has more of an edge compared to the v6 the difference in gas milage is miminal and yes it all depends what you will be using the truck for.

Turbos require additional mechanical part spinning at a very fast rate. Anything spinning at fast rates will raise the potential for wear, plus the axiom that the more parts you have, the better chance of part failure.

I like those simple Ford V-8's time tested for the most part.

 

I ordered 5.0 as I expect to put 300000km+ before I get a new one. I think the 5.0 will hold up maintenance wise over the long haul better than the EB.

 

I have not driven any of the two, but would always take the V8. As the others already pointed out, the reliability is the point. I see no advantage of the 3.5 over the 5.0 and it costs even more. So why even think about it? Ok it is cheaper to opt for more power with a turbo, if that is your plan, but that again would reduce reliability.

Here in Germany we are down to turbocharged micro engines in pretty much every vehicle. And I hate the way these things drive. And from my point of view 3.5 is a micro engine in a full-size truck.

 

Is there a way to shut off the auto stop/start on the 5.0?

 

There is a button on the dash to disable the start/stop. Must disable every time you start the vehicle though.

 

There are 3 ways to disable it for good - a trailer light tester, a jumper wire on the switch, or with a laptop and FORScan.

 

Would that switch be the extra switch on the back of the brake pedal?

 

No, the dash switch that disables it.
