Is there a difference between a 2016 F150 3.5 Eco boost with max tow vs a 2016 F150 3.5 Eco boost with HD, or is that the same animal?

 

Heavy duty payload package has different shocks, some front suspension components, springs and rear axle and possibly brakes. And has a much higher payload capacity.

Tow rating is unaffected by this. HD is also available on the 5.0, not just the 3.5 Eco

Max tow is JUST a higher tow rating

I test drove a HD payload truck when I was looking for my 2015 and found the ride to be stiffer

 

If you tow heavy and/or carry significant loads, the increased GVWR of the HD will make a positive difference. The regular payload, even with max tow option, will run out of payload capacity well before you reach the max tow rating.

You can't upgrade an existing truck.

 

I'll assume you have a short bed SuperCrew. So you couldn't come close to the intended HD Payload truck even if you tried because HD trucks are only long beds (6.5' SuperCrew and 8' long bed SuperCab.) Wait for the 2018 F-250 Light Duty/2018 F-150 Heavy Duty that is rumored to be coming out.
