Dumb Topic just out of curiosity

Long ago I had a 1990 Silverado. Not a bad truck. the only problem I had was that the white paint fell off. Fell right off, dinner plate sized gaps with grey primer showning. It never rusted, just fell off after a few years. I noticed around that time that a number of white or silver chevy trucks around town had the same problem. I've noticed it on some cars over the years. All white.

Today while walking into a grocery store, a Ford truck, white, maybe 5-7 years old with the same large hand to dinner plate sized patches of white paint off and the grey primer showing. Just like had happened to me.

Has anyone ever noticed this with white paint on cars or trucks? Did it happen to you like it did with me? I've never had a white vehicle since then and my 2015 F150 is Bronze fire.

Nothing important. I just wondered if this is a white paint specific issue and how widespread it was.

I see it a lot on white work vans around here. Your observation is correct, it seems to always be an issue with white.

Never noticed that around here. Maybe it only happens in the frozen north with the increased metal expanding and contracting with the temp changes.

a few auto makers tried years ago to just e-coat vehicles and skip the primer paint before finish paint. with the lighter colours of finish paint though UV rays would penetrate through the finish paint and break down the e-coat treatment and the paint would lose cohesion. what you are seeing after white paint falls off is not primer but the e-coat treatment.

^^The more you know...^^

Toyota also had problems with their super white color recently too. I think it was also a single stage paint, no clear.

My truck is an 08 and its white. Only flaking I've had is a very very small spot on the top of the bed along the bed rail. I touched it up a couple years ago and it hasn't flaked anymore.

A body guy at my Ford dealer told me most of the Oxford white stuff isn't clear coated. Makes sense. I remember when the small amount of paint flaked, it was just white, no clear coat with it.

Well, the small spot on my truck that peeled does not appear to be clear coated.

Not just in the north. I've seen a lot of white Chevy trucks in Florida that did the same thing. A friend of mine had a new S-10 and the paint on the ENTIRE hood let go and slide off of the front in one giant piece one day when he stopped for a red light! IIRC the truck was less than a year old so the dealership repainted the hood for him. A few years ago it was VERY common to see white Chevy trucks around here with larger than a dinner plate grey patches where the paint had flaked off.

The only vehicles I've really noticed it happening badly on are the 2003-present Chevy express vans.

No matter what part of the country, I always see them peeling on the hood.

Work trucks/vans are typically very neglected and abused when it come to paint care

I drove my white 2003 Screw for 12 years. I dinged it up, scratched it up, rock-chipped it up, and barely hardly ever washed it.

Not even once did I ever experience the paint flaking off as described in this thread.
