Upgrade to high mileage 5.0 or keep 5.3?

Hey guys,

I have the option of upgrading to a 2011 F150 FX4 Super Cab with 117k miles for just a few more dollars a month than I pay now for a 2007 classic 1500 Silverado with 122k miles. The f150 has a 5.0 v8 and is super clean white in color and has leather interior and bone stock. My 07 chevy has a 6" RCX lift and 35s and the lt3 package with leather interior. I just had to replace the hub, brake pads and rotors. Currently drives fine and I don't expect too many problems in the near future. However I am very interested in the F1 50 and would like to know the pinons on a high mileage 5.0. What is everyone's opinion? Only have pic of my truck right now:

That is not really high mileage on the 5.0. They are very dependable, really depends on its maintenance. Sounds like a nice truck. One thing to keep in mind, you know your truck and its history, any used truck can be a risk.

Thank you... Any other responses are greatly appreciated as well. Another thing tho mine is used and slightly abused by previous owners. The f150 I'm looking at has only one owner and was maintenance tech for a dealership. So I guess that's a plus

I'd check it over and if it's in good shape get it.

I've read on forums that some early 5.0's had an oblong #4 cylinder and causing it to knock. From what I understand you'll notice it as soon as you fire up the truck. If the truck has that many miles on it, and it's quiet, I'd say it's clear of the issue and wouldn't worry about it.

You won't be disappointed. I traded in an 05 Silverado with a 5.3 for my 13 F150 5.0 and it's 10x the truck the Silverado was.

That's kinda what I'm thinking... Is that it'll be worlds better than my chevy. I love chevy and grew up with Fords and Chevys but my 2008 I owned just ruined any trust I had with ford. Had a 5.4 and had more problems than a rotting dead horse. I put 95k on it and sold it. I think I can get into this one without paying much more.

I really just want something reliable and something that'll get me on North Carolina beaches. My chevy can do that but I'm not convinced that it won't have more problems. I know the 5.3 is bulletproof up to about 280k miles but I don't know about the rest of it.

Guess I'm more thinking out loud on here and looking for a push one way or another.

Most on here will tell you the Ford is 10 times better than the chevy on a good day, but you have have to consider what site your on. The 5.4 you had in the 08 was a low spot for ford trucks, you either got a good one or you got a piece of crap, sounds like you got the later. The newer 5.0 is still a modular based engine and the block has the same external dimensions as a 4.6. The 5.0 is basically a bored and stroked 4.6 with 4 valve heads with twin variable cam timing. Overall it's a good engine that should last well past the 200K mark. If the rest of the truck is in good shape and the price is right, get it.

Now if that truck was an 09 or 10 with that many miles, I would steer clear of it. 09-10's still had the 3v 5.4, the same engine your 08 had.

My stories the same. My 04 5.4 made me never want to own another Ford again so I got the Chevy. It wasn't a bad truck but after a couple of years I started getting the itch for another F150. It seemed to me Ford pretty much got it together on these newer models so I figured I'd take a chance and so far I couldn't be happier with it.

Here's your push....just do it

Thanks for all the quick and thorough replies guys. I always hate it when somebody chimes in and says "I've have mine for 20k miles and it's the best truck ever." Lol. Sounds like it would be a good choice and clearly an upgrade on all sides from interior to exterior.

Any other input, good or bad is welcome. MTM Ford seems like you gave me a shove and I'm leaning toward the f150 now. Just gotta win on "The Price is Right" lol.

Oh and another quick question. How is the tranny and drivetrain on these newer models? Mine made a horrible grinding, suction noise randomly when driving which would "suction shut" and go away upon slowing down around 5mph. Random question. Don't even know what that noise was on my 5.4. Just another reason I shyed away from the 150 for the last couple years.

BTW I would be planning to keep this until it rots. Literally. I can't afford to trade another truck in after this. Just looking to get a truck that'll last until the frame rots off of I die. I prefer that to be a long time on both sides of the matter.

I recommend you keep what you have until you can afford a truck with much less miles than the one you have now. You might not be gaining any reliability and even though the payments are close to the same, how long you have to make those payments is probably years longer.

I also have the option of a 2011 ecoboost 4x4 xlt scab with 67k miles. Looks like it needs new tires. It's black and has fake chrome crap from ford all over it but I can afford that one as well. Any thoughts on this one?

1st year ecoboost. Do you know the history of the truck, if some yahoo installed a "tune" that jacked up the boost to extremes? I'd be leary.

If you're in it for the long run I'd also try to find something with less miles. I don't know what your price range is but I got my 13 "loaded" XLT 5.0 with 28,000 miles for $26,000.
