2011 f150 lug nut issue

So I took my 2011 f150 fx4 with stock 20s on it to get a tire rotation and these folks at the ford quick lane screwed up half my lug nuts by using the wrong size socket. Any who the couldn't do the rotation cause they said my front lug nuts were "swollen" cause the chrome caps over them were messed up. B.S. I had them off a month before hand with a 4 way to do my brakes. Any who I grabbed a set of M14-2.0 Mcgard lug nuts from a friend of mine to replace them cause they wouldnt and wanted 7 dollars a peice for them to replace them. Well I got the new set and the taper seat seems way to small compared to the old lug nuts was concerned that the new "acorn" style nuts won't have the same holding holding power due to the smaller taper on them. Any body else run in to this or use them?

OP, Go back to where ever they messed up your nuts and raise hell! Make them buy OEM Ford nuts (not aftermarket crap!) and replace them! That's what any reputable shop would have done in the first place. My 2010 -150 (FX-4 with 20s also) has been into tire shop several times (two different shops) and they had no trouble with them and didn't damage them. Your shop is If necessary call their corporate office and complain!

I did complain there. It went no where told them i have never had issues told thrm I wanted them replaced and I wasnt doing it and they refused. They said that salt and corrosion had caused the chrome caps over the lugnut its self to "swell" and strip out so they say its not there fault. I had the front wheels off a month ago with a 4 way with no problem.

Given that FoMoCo uses capped lugnuts for their exposed wheels it's not uncommon for the caps to get mucked-up and separate from the the nut portion.

If you're still under warranty (3year/36,000miles) it's covered.

If not, opt for aftermarket solid lugnuts. Personally use Gorilla ...

*Guaranteed for life.

I got a set from a buddy that works at mcgard just like that but the taper on the end isn't big enough and doesn't look like it will seat with enough of the rim to be effective. The taper on the factory lugs is much larger and contacts much more surface area then the ones he gave me so I'm not sure if I should find a set with a larger taper to seat better

factory lugnuts are crap

I have the same problem with my truck ! Tbe dealer replaced a bunch for me last time i was in for service. Now i just swapped my snow tires on and found a bunch more swollen caps! I barely managed to change them. I remember when i worked at a garage when i was young we saw this a lot on tempos. I can't believe they put this crap on my truck! What am i going to do if i get a flat on a back road with no cell service ? They need to use solid nuts on these trucks, at least here where we have temperature changes and salt on roads! I'm so pissed about this.

The dealer says "the lug nuts are swollen". This issue is not unique to Ford trucks, as my wife's 2010 Fusion had the same issue. Removing the sheet metal covers from the lug nuts (cut the cap off with a rotary wheel) revealed cadmium plated nuts underneath that had no corrosion on them. The reason the lug nuts couldn't be removed with the proper sized socket was that the dealer, each time they had rotated the tires during their complementary oil and filter/safety check/tire rotation, had used pneumatic impact wrenches to re-install the nuts that displaced and distorted the covers so as to make them oversized on the corners. Our dealer refused to replace the nuts under warranty and under the extended warranty, saying it wasn't their fault. I drove a proper sized impact socket over them with a heavy hammer, then punched them out of the sockets.

Needless to say, the dealer doesn't perform any more rotations on my 2011 truck or her new Edge because of their heavy hands with an impact wrench.

Dad had the same problem on my moms 12 fusion. The whole casing came off. The lug nuts are junk. My truck and his both from taking the wheels off a few times show signs of not lasting real long. I use a socket every time and a ratchet.

I've noticed the same thing happening to mine. Any solid lug nut found to work as well as the oem? Link?

TIA!
