Stolen cats, now my trucks smells like gas. Help!

hey everyone, I'm new to this forum as you can see.

Long story short. My catalyst converters were stolen two weeks ago. For a quick fix and because I was low on cash I wen cat less and by just adding a pipe to each side a mounting the oxygen sensor.

Now my truck smells like gas and doesn't drive right overall. Bad gas mileage too.

I think my cats were bad to begin with sing pace I did get a code for both driver and passenger side cats below threshold. So ha! Thiefs!

What would be the best way to fix this issue. I know oem is going to be crazy expensive. I was thinking magnaflow but I can't seem to find anything for a 2010... I live in CA so that makes it worse with the law. Help please!

California will require you to install factory cats for replacements. You will not pass the visual part of the inspection. It smells because the cats are gone. You are smelling the HC........

Hottexhaust only has up to 2008 f150

I figured in CA I would. But I just got smog fed 2 months ago and a smog is good for 2 years. In two years I won't have the truck anymore. I need a fix. The truck accelerates like crap and smells bad.

Anyone have a solution to this. I was going to purchase a magnaflow cats for a 2008 with the build in oxygen sensor since that is the only year that comes up.
Anyone familiar with this or who has done this?

Someone else mentioned magnaflow a 94103 or 94603 but I have no clue. I need that truck for work, dammit

I have looked underneath 2009+ trucks but I am not sure of the cats, I know they are smaller and at an angle, and 2.5" tubing. If they have a sensor in them, get the Magnaflow #94136s. If not, get the 94106.

Why not try reporting it to insurance? Explain what happened and see what they will do if you have full coverage. Hopefully won't think you did it yourself.

Try looking for -used- from a salvage yard.

Otherwise, bite-the-bullet and buy non-performance after-market replacements.

QUESTION: WHAT? No comprehensive vechicle insurance?

If they were stolen, why won't your insurance cover it?

My truck is paid off. And I started to use it for work more and more so I decided to save money by going with limited liability insurance. It's not fully covered anymore.

In CA salvage yards won't sell you catalityc converters.

Darrenws6 I will look into those part numbers

Anyone know where I can get a diagram of the exhaust set up for a 2010 5.4l
Maybe someone has gone through this before and can shed some light.
Thanks all for the quick replys

You could buy federal cats and they should fit and function just the same. The problem is that it's not legal to ship them to California, and without the CARB certification number stamped on them, you'd fail your next smog test if/when they see it. But at that point, you might as well shell out the extra money for OE cats. You could also look for used cats out of state. The CA emissions are sold all over the place. Now that I think about it, I don't remember the last time I saw a Ford product that didn't comply with California standards according to the catalyst decal. Something to look into.

You might want to rethink that. The comprehensive coverage option ...
  • is VERY inexpensive (just a few $$$$$ a year).
    .
  • provides coverage for fire, wind, theft, damage from hitting deer, glass breakage, etc., etc., etc..

Sadly a sign of the times. 'round these parts it's VERY common.

e.g. Local NAPA store purchased 10 *new* pickups as delivery vehicles. Within a fews days of the purchase all of the catalytic converters were cut-off the trucks one night while parked next to the store.

Never underestimate the determination of a tweaker with a hacksaw and a craving for another 8-ball.

To the best of my knowledge federal law prohibits the sale of used catalytic converters. Odds are you won't find one and if you do you shouldn't waste your money on it. The reason catalytic converters are stolen off cars is that they're an easy $50-$75 at the scrapper who'll in turn sell them to a processor to reclaim the Platinum and Palladium used in them. The stolen converters aren't sold as replacements to people.

The reason your vehicle smells of gas and runs like crap is due to two things. The Catalytic converters react with unburned fuel in the exhaust which is why there's the smell. There's also a post-cat Oxygen sensor in your exhaust. The PCM is measuring the Oxygen in the exhaust gases before and after the Catalytic converter. There are ways of fooling the PCM, but those mods are a legal grey area.
