Fuel rate sucks

just drove 400 miles on interstate 75. About 11 degrees F with a strong wind, speed at 60 to 70 all day, best I could get was 16.5 MPG. I've got 3250 miles on a 2013 FX4 5 Liter S/C with 3.55s. My old 07 F150 FX 2 4.6L, got better milage with a 5 speed.

I was hoping for 19 or 20 MPG, not sure if thw cold, the head wind and the low milage would affect the MPG??

If your were on I-75 in Ohio that explains why. Ohio uses E-10 year round and it hurts mileage.

A few weeks ago I drove down to Kent and back with mine and got 17.1 with mine doing the speed limit. About two weeks before that I went down to Columbus and back and got 16.9 going down at 75 MPH and got 16.0 coming back at 80 MPH on I-71

My truck is also a 13 FX4 with the 5 liter and 3.55's on 20's and a screw. The mileage seems kinda low but my 07 with the 5.4 would only see 12 mpg if i drove it off a cliff with a tailwind. If I kept my foot out of it and did the speed limit, the best I got was 11.3

A PICKUP TRUCK!
AND ...
  • it's a hoser, eh? MEANING: kilometers / imperial gallons.
    (miles / gallons) X 1.2 = MPG(US).
    .
  • OH YA ... How's the tires' PSI, eh?
    .
  • it's super charged ("5 Liter S/C"). Was s/he meaning super cab?

Wind speed doesn't help much not to mention with the extreme cold we've been having in the north east it effects milage the air is to dense when its so cold therefore effects milage and power. I experience this in WNY in my 2011 f150 5.0 I usually pull between 17-18 mpg mixed driving in the warmer weather in the cold between 14.5 and 16 mpg ish Can defiantly feel the difference with temperature variations

Drive into a head wind with any truck and its going to affect mpg no matter how aerodynamic the truck is, its still a truck. The cold doesn't help either. Given the conditions, I wouldn't consider that mileage out of the ordinary. Your new truck is also 4wd and your old one wasn't.

You also live in AZ, have 2wd, and your truck is lowered.

My 06 screw 2wd gets about 21.3 mpg doing 75 mph on the interstate. I have roush 20's with 355's. I do pay attention to my air pressure on my tires. Believe me it has a big factor on fuel mileage. And I also change my spark plugs at 60k.

And yes head wind will decrease fuel mileage. Part of owning a truck...

We've had some serious winds in Iowa this past few weeks. Truck was at 72mph level ground into a 25-30mph headwind. Boost guage was steady at 5-6psi, and I was getting 13.0-13.5 mpg mile after mile. The wind definitely will eat fuel! 35psi cold pressure on tires.

Return trip, same road, same speed, 21.0-22.0 on the indicator.

Same thing happens to me going east/west between Michigan and New York. Going east I get 21. Coming home west, 16. It's all about the wind.

To the OP, it will get better when you get some mileage on the truck and when we get back to the summer gas.

Factor in 400 pounds for 4WD and 2" of overall ride height vs. your old truck, along with driving into a head wind, cold weather, and really shi**y winter blend gas with higher ethanol and butane content, sounds about right.
