Payload ratings.....

So, I was looking at the rating stickers on my drivers door the other day and I have to admit I was a bit surprised by my payload rating. According to the door jamb sticker, the payload rating for my truck is 1249lbs. This surprised me, as according to Ford's website the payload for a comparably equipped truck(Screw, 4wd, 5.0L, 157" WB) is 1570lbs. Now, I will say I understand that not every truck is exactly the same and there is variance in weight due to options and trim so not every truck is gonna be rated at 1570lbs. But over 220lbs less? At the payload rating that I currently have, if you put 4 adults in the vehicle(avg of 200lbs, lets say), you are already at 2/3 of the payload rating, with only about 450lbs to go. I am going to get a bedcover soon-thats another 70lbs. Now I am down to 380lbs of payload capacity. At that point, towing is pretty much out of the question and I have to keep a close eye on the gear that I put in the bed to make sure I dont exceed rating.

So, to wrap that all up together-I am disappointed. When I was researching I saw the 1570 number and thought that it would be more than enough for me. Had I known it would be less than 1250, I would have more seriously considered(and probably spent the extra money for) an eco or 6.2 in order to get the increased payload rating. Has anyone else seen a big variation between what they got and the numbers on Ford's website? Is there any way to find this information out ahead of time before ordering a vehicle? At the end of the day I dont blame anyone for this, but it is frustrating. Input?

I have a shorter wheelbase (145?) Supercrew XLT EB with a couple options on it, but not many. Standard tow package, no hd payload. My sticker says 1517 capacity.

The 1570# is the maximum that model will have, with base options. Every option you add takes away from the payload rating for your truck. Running boards, radio upgrades, moon roof, seat style, etc, all add weight and reduce your rating.

1250 sure seems disappointing for a truck. My wife has a 4 banger Jeep Patriot with 950lbs.
If you put a cap on your truck, you would be close to 1000. Do you have a lot of options?

It is pretty much a fully loaded Lariat. Like I said, I was expecting some variance-just not 220+lbs worth. I know there is no (legal) way to increase the payload.

While you cannot change the payload sticker, you can change tires, axles, wheel assemblies, springs, and shocks.... all of which are what give the truck it's ratings. All depends on the money you want to spend. Keep in mind that these ratings are VERY conservative.

Checked a friends truck, same as mine except with the longer wheelbase, payload only at 1320ish. Very curious. Think the xlt offroad package accounts for 200lbs?

Maybe not the off road package by itself. But when you add the weight of the skid plates plus sunroof plus running boards, I suppose that is a good chunk of it. I guess I will know better next time lol. As far as the longer bed trucks carrying less-yeah it is kinda ironic. But, the chassis isnt rated for any more weight and there is a foot more of vehicle weight to contend with, so it makes sense.

My problem isnt whether or not I think the truck can handle it or not-the type of payload range I was looking for (1500lbs) isnt that much higher. The problem is even if I upgrade springs, tires, etc is it doesnt change the factory rating. So if I were ever to get into an accident while loaded down all the insurance and state trooper would care about is the number on the door and the fact I was over it.
Its not worth the risk....

What is the GVWR of your vehicle? There is about 4 - 5 different GVWRs you can get get with the F150, and it does not necessarily have anything to do with wheelbase. You can get anything from about 7,000 to 8200lbs. My guess yours is around 7,000.

That along with options will change your payload quite a bit.

This is why I always say go with the Max Tow Package, and check the door sticker before you buy.
For now you can help yourself a little with what prime mentioned: tires and HD shocks.

They exist, see my response in the thread you started. This thread is 9 years old and not applicable to 2015+ trucks.
