122 miles when Low Fuel illuminated
122 miles when Low Fuel illuminated
Got into truck this morning to go to church, and low fuel light came on, checked miles to empty, and it showed 122 miles to empty. Doesn't that seem high or is it based on my average mileage or what? I have the 2013 F150 XLT regular cab 3.73 gears with ecoboost. At 17.3mph average into 122 miles means I have roughly 7 gal left in the tank.
How does it compare to your results?

if i remember right the manual says that the miles to empty is an average of the mpgs over the last 200 miles or so. i usually get gas before it goes below a quarter tank but ive had mine come on as early as 80 miles to empty. where was the needle at when it came on?
The low fuel light is different for every truck. Unless they have gotten super-duper better.
My 03 F-150 will go about 25-30 miles, in my wife's 2000 Expy.........you better have a gas station in sight!

Were you parked on a hill to throw the gauge off? On the newer trucks the PCM takes a reading of how much gas you have left, compares it to how you have been driving and comes up with the estimated range. Somewhere when there isn't much fuel left the warning comes on. I have not seen a listing of how much fuel in the tank this is based on but it has something to do with it. My 2005 always came on when it estimated 50 miles to empty but I don't know how accurate that was. I got it to hit 1 mile as I pulled into the gas station and didn't feel like finding out how much further it would go.
Do you have the dashboard display on your truck? If so it's possible your truck is using towing history to calculate estimated range. One website that was testing the 2011 F150 had the opposite thing happen to them and they managed to run their truck out of fuel because they were towing and never got a low fuel warning.
Are people so stupid these days that they can't read a gas gage and have to rely on a yellow light on the dash to determine they're out of gas?

You can get an EB in a regular cab long bed, ie 8foot bed.
I have had that happen when I parked on a slant, and idled there for a while and shut it off, the next day low fuel light was on, but had way more gas than it thought, when I leveled it out.

Low fuel light illuminated at 122 miles
That's what I thought too. I will say however, that I didn't check the owner's manual to see what they say.
Based on my 17.3 mpg average into 122 gives me 7 gallons. I am going to fill up today to see how many gallons it takes.
I was parked in my garage, which is pretty level. When the light came on, I looked at the guage and it was still above the red mark. In my other vehicles, the needle would go down to the E and then the light would come on. This was above the red mark.
I do have the dashboard display, but have not towed with this truck yet. Only have about 1600 miles on it right now IIRC. Today is 5cents off Monday, so will fill it and validate whether the miles to empty were close. I have a 36 gal tank, minus probably 6 gal now would mean I should be able to put 30 gal into the tank.
