Thanks for the info. Just did it myself in 5 mins. But I couldn't reach up from inside fender. Instead got 2 flathead screwdrivers and located pins, slight pry and it popped right out.

Thanks a million for this great fix! I was all set to take it to the dealer until I read this, and ten minutes later I've got it taken care of. I used a stubby flathead screwdriver and the unit just popped right out. I thought about adding a screw as the above post describes, but once I figured out how to remove it, I don't really mind doing it again if necessary.

Top tip, with the fuel filler door assembly out of the way use the hose to rinse out the area above the wheel that normally can not be reached. Just be careful to not spray the filler neck, water doesn't burn very well.

Dealer sold me the part this afternoon with a slight grin, for $69, most likely knowing the issue.
Removed the existing, pulled off the spring, reset the pin, drilled a hole in he pin & installed a small cotter pin to keep it in place, reinstalled & it works fine.
Looks like I'll be making another trip to the dealer but I'll have the grin this time!

I registered on here just to thank the OP for the thread.

Sunday I had a group of 8-12 yoa kids walk through and my truck was parked on the street instead of in the usual spot in the driveway. I was on the side of the house rolling up the hose and heard one of them exclaim "OH ****!" and heard them run off. I walked out to the street and saw that one of them had left a pair of socks right by my truck under the gas door. I didn't see anything wrong so I walked back to the house.

Yesterday I went to get gas and the door came open funny. It hung low and wouldn't close right. It hit me why those kids ran off.

I did a search and found this thread. Thanks OP!

If (when) it does it again, I'll do this little mod.

Thanks!

Registered just to say thanks! Took me a bit longer than most folks though. After spending quite a bit of time grumbling because I could not reach the top tabs, I removed the rear left wheel which made the job much easier.

I found it easier if you remove the front left wheel!

Thanks for the great post on the fuel door!

Just one additional tip, may have already been mentioned.
To ease removal of the door unit, loosen the hose clamp holding the fuel fill pipe to the inner wheel well. Clamp is located just forward of the upper shock bracket. Backing off this hose clamp will allow the fuel fill unit to move enough to ease removal of door unit and also allow better access to tabs holding door unit on.

A BIG Thank You

My fuel door broke this week so I went to this site for some info and just as I expected there was a post on how to fix it.
THANK YOU to the OP for the info!
The dealer wanted $130 to fix it and I fixed it for $0.00.

Thanks again, Phil

Thanks for the great post with clear directions and pictures. It really helped me fix the fuel door on my 2009 F-150 KR. The pin pulled out of the bottom part of the hinge and was not really broken. I was able to put back together . I just don't know how you reached all the way up behind the fender. That was the worst part. I agree this is a crazy design. The pin barely fits into the hole and is not captured. Hope this doesn't happen again. Now I will be very very careful each time I fill up with gas.
