Remove Coin Holder?

Can someone tell me how to (safely) remove what looks like a coin / change holder insert that is located just below the a/c vent, to the right of the steering column, on the instrument panel? Does it just snap out? Or is there a fastener that must be removed from the rear?

Not sure about the newer body style ('09+), but on mine it just yanks out and is held in place by a couple plastic clips. Being careful, I just applied a steady pull to the coin holder, which has the wiring connected for the 4WD shift on the fly (mine is 2WD but they put the wiring in there). What are your plans for the coin holder? I thought of a 2 1/8" temp display for mine, but never got around to it (mine is an XL with no outdoor temp display).

Thanks, I thought that maybe the coin holder was held in by some plastic clip(s), but didn't want to pull too hard on it, for fear of breaking something while trying to remove it.

I was thinking of mounting a small voltmeter gauge there, to monitor the 12vdc battery bus voltage...I have no need for keeping coins there...

search for "boost gauge". someone on the forum mounted a boost gauge in this exact location. I don't remember if they posted pics of the install or just the finished product though.

Yeah, Ford had a hole in the instrument panel and had to fill it with something. But really, a coin holder? Why not put something there that is actually useful?

I popped it out today... sort of pulled up and out on the lower part of the thing, and it unsnapped OK - it is indeed held in place by three little tabbed ears that fit into the mostly-round cutout in the panel. Since this is not a 4x4, the cable for that switch just plugs into a dummy connector holder on the back of the coin holder...

I came out of a 2011 Mustang GT and kept my Aeroforce gauge, displays tons of info. I took out that coin holder, used a dremmel to clean up the back side of the dash a little so it would be centered and installed it there

I know on the 2WD trucks that spot is used for the Differential lock switch. I wonder if the wiring at the rear of the truck is present for an enterprising individual to add that option to their truck later on. That spot looks ideal for an aftermarket boost gauge though. I wish Ford had moved the diff lock switch to their world's longest column shifter.

Not always the case. Mine still has the shifter on the floor for 4x4 and has the coin holder.

Coin holder options

I found that one wire connected to the plug on the back of the coin holderis a switched power lead, I used it to power my GPS and radar detector also added 12 volt cigarette lighter plug for future use as there is no other unused switched power leads to speak of underneath the dashboard. As the two existing cigarette lighter plugs are not switched, they are constant 12 volt.

I was just about to ask what the wires went to....

Glad you posted this part. Will be helpful for adding back up lights to mine in the future. Should be able to use this as power for the switch. Or I might just do you like you use it for my GPS.

A 12v powered and plugged in coin holder? Haha! What comes on if you put coins in it? I left it alone in my '08 but now that I got a '14 I might have to do something with that. Seems like it might have alot of potential.
