I just picked up my ecoboost and took it on its first real drive. It is awesome. Tons of power, really quiet, handles great. But then again, I knew that from the test drive...



I've read many of the posts regarding fuel economy and started to get concerned, but today's drive set my mind at ease. I drove from Mission Viejo California to Riverside California, 40 miles of hills, traffic, crowded freeways. About 25% city / 75% highway. On the highway I averaged between 70-75 MPH. Got down to 20 MPH a few times due to traffic. Average fuel economy over the 40 miles was 21.7 MPG according to the computer. We'll see what the real calculation yields the next time I fill up, but I am very impressed so far. Can't wait for the engine to actually break in!

even though i have the new 5.0 im am overwhelmingly happy with the mpgs so far. Only have 160miles on it but man, seeing an average of 18mpgs at 70mph is friggin sweet. My 98 with the 4.6 didn't get more then 12.5 on the highway.

I have a 98 f150 4.6l and I average 18 mpg combined. That's what's keeping me from buying a new one at this time. I keep looking, maybe a 12???

Back in 2004 I had a 2001 supercrew with the 2v 4.6 that I loved. It averaged about 17 and got upwards of 21 on the highway when I cruised at 70. The downside was that it could only tow 5500 or 6000 lbs, I forget which. That, and it wasn't very powerful either.

This time around, I considered buying a used 2009 with the 3v 4.6 because of the what I had read about fuel economy and power increase. But I test drove both and they are night and day difference.

The reason i went with the ecoboost was that it gets better fuel economy and has crazy power and torque. I test drove a 2011 Platinum with the 6.2 and to me it felt like the Ecoboost still had more power. So you get better fuel economy than the 4.6, and power nearing the top of what any manufacturer has to offer in a half-ton truck.

And it didn't hurt that I got mine with $4500 off in incentives and another ~$500 off using my fathers D plan. $27,500 before tax and license...

 

Well, I am buying a set of the factory FX4 20" wheels with the Pirelli's on it. I'll run the same route and try to replicate the conditions to see how much that swap affects my mileage.

 

My wife and I were driving from our main place in Minnesota to our cabin in Wisconsin last Friday night. I needed to do some work on my laptop so she was driving the Ecoboost (I find it too distracting to be doing work on my laptop while driving ). At the time she started driving, I reset the mpg meter.

Anyway, she had the cruise set at 60 mph on the two-lane highway just for personal preference and to flow with traffic. Weather was 58 degrees; wind was calm; pretty much level (maybe a couple very slight grades), with a few curves here and there. I had maybe 250 pounds of tools and equipment in the back.

At the end of the hour that she drove that 60 mph stretch, the display showed 27.2 mpg. Maybe it was a combination of the calm winds and ambient air temp being "just right" for the turbo/intercooler combo.

My previous best is when in steady cruise control at about 65 mph; have gotten in the 24-25 range.

I continue to be in awe of the efficiency of this powertrain. That thing was purring at 1400 rpm while getting us there, quiet without any hint of lugging or other distress, a great ride.

That is awesome, what differential gear do you have?

 

Anyone running 91 octane in their EB's? I was reading on the smaller EB's for the Explorer (2.0L) and it sounded like it was recommended if you wanted max power and mileage. Didn't know if this was true in the F150.

 

Wait till it breaks in...22-24mpg!!!

 

Perfect set-up man... 2wd and 3.55's are stellar. 3.15's have got to be amazing on the highway. 2wd's are great for mpg's

 

Man, it must be pretty sweet having that taller rear end, 4x2 with slimmer tires. My last fill-up again netted me 13.7 MPG's mixed 50/50. This tank so far I went 80 miles. 95% highway and nothing over 70mph. More like 65mph for 75% of the miles. The trip was reset and so was the MPG meter. It never got over 18.5 MPGs. The second I got off the ramp and hit my first light it dropped to 18 mpg. Then leaving my location back to the freeway it dropped to 17mpg. I then repeated the same trek home (nothing over 70mph, etc..) and now sits at 17.5 combined. It must be the weight of 4x4, 20's, or I have somewhat of a factory turd in the MPG dept. I'm almost at the 1000 mile mark where people say "better mpg's happen". Not trying to be a whiney SOB, but I get jealous looking at everybodys EB getting 18+mpg's and I can't break 14mpg combined.

 

What size are your stock tires?

 

Maybe yours is holding out on you... After 1k it's just going to skyrocket to 18 combined and never come down, and give you 20+ on the highway...
