Click & Clunk from 10' FX4

Hey Guys,

Have a 2010 FX4 SCREW. Transmission started clunking worse and worse after buying it. Dealership lubed drive shaft where it goes into transmission, didnt fix squat. Then truck started clicking when going from P to R and R to D. So i take into a different dealer because first dealer didn't fix anything, it clunked worse actually after they worked on it. Dealer says we are ordering a new drive line. Finally get truck to dealer today, say it will only be a half day since its just a drive shaft. Call and find out it is still clicking and drive shaft did not solve the problem. When at the dealer i drove a 2011 FX4 5.0 and the transmission was worse than mine. However, I did drive my neighbors 2010 Harley F150 w AWD/4L and his transmission was great, it didn't kick into second gear or lunge when letting off the throttle.

Anyone else in the same boat with this lousy transmission?

I am in the same boat as you Nick. Different truck, but same noise as you describe. I have an 08 f150 FX4 x-cab. The first time I took the truck in, they lubed the spline on the driveshaft I believe, it was good for a few hundred miles and it came back. Took it in again, same service, same result. The 3rd time I took it in, they replaced the driveshaft, that eliminated the clunk and the akward feeling from takeoff, but the click was still there. So, just after they put the new driveshaft in, it was still making the click noise. They lubed up the driveshaft with their special grease. A few hundred miles and it came back. I am now at 40k, this has been doing it since 15-20k. Just took the truck in for inspection last month, told them about the clicking noise, they looked at it and said this is normal. I think its their way of saying we dont know what else to do with it. SO i guess i am just gonna have to live with it.

That's bullcrap! Ask them if you could test drive a 2010 FX4 and see if that clicking noise is normal.

They need to make it right if you are not past your warranty.

In addition to the test drive, you may want to grab the service manager or one of the techs and have them do a ride along so they hear what you hear. They may be hearing a different problem and did not notice your issue.

Keep records and if all else fails call the ford customer service line as well and escalate the issue until someone at ford puts pressure on the dealers. Also check your states lemon laws you may be covered under that as well.

Don't let the dealer screw you over your SCREW!

There are several TSB's that address transmission/drive shaft issues within the "Recall & TSB" tab of this website. Have you checked out any of those???

Hope it helps.

I just had mine worked on. they reprogrammed the tranny.

perform ssm 214/0, reset kam on tcm & perfom adaptive drive cycle.

Haven't noticed a difference yet, only live 2 miles from dealer.

Hey guys, \I didnt have the clicking noise you describe but the reverse and shifting problems were pretty bad.
Check out my thread:
https://www.f150online.com/forums/20...e-problem.html

"And heres what they did:
Picked the truck up just now, work done:
-PCM and TCM reflash to new values from factory
-there is a plastic piece in the tranny that holds a sensor (pretty sure the svc advisor said this was in the tranny fluid, sensing the pressure(?)), this housing leaks and allows air into the sensor, throwing the tranny controller into conniptions. they replaced it per instructions (my service advisor said this will most likely be a recall-for what its worth) and the truck feels better than new.

my specifics:
2010 Fx2 Supercrew, 4.6, 6k miles. post/PM with questions."

Hope it helps.

WOOO THEY FINALLY FIXED IT. I guess the flange that connects to the drive shaft from the differential was loose and they tightened it. I hope there was no damage done from driving the car for 8300 miles like that. This truck has never felt so good to drive. I couldn't be happier with it now. It just sucks Ford service department blows. Especially the way they treated my poor truck. I dropped it off clean every time just to show them how **** I am. Got it back filthy every time. This last time they had food steps all over the door sill. Its amazing they are so careless, I don't see why they have to treat it like a piece. It is my work truck, but I take pretty good care of it. I should also mention that they did reprogram the transmission before, but that wouldn't have solved anything. What I was feeling was a clunk on acceleration, even my mom who doesn't know cars could feel it, so once it started clicking, I could show them, it was just from a stop to letting off the gas, so they all stood around as I made the car click and click and clunk.

frdtrtnfx4: Tell them what worked on my truck. Its amazing how many of the guys told me it was normal and how many told me it wasn't. Once again Ford service is horrible. Its a shame. Now that my F150 is as good as my Ranger was I would still own a ford again as long as I don't have to deal with their service dpt. I DIY all my maintenance.

Hey Nick I've got the same truck as you....I don't have the clanking noise but i have a few other issues...do you have any of the following:

1. Before engine and tranny is warm does your truck shift completely different than when its warm? (in my truck the shift points are much higher and there is no power when it downshifts)
2. At really low speeds (crawling in traffic or getting out of a tight parking spot) does your truck shake? (my truck shakes and it drives me nuts)

I don't have the same truck (4.6 3v 3.73 LS) but I have similar problems. I do notice a lot more shuddering in the trans when cold, esp. when coasting to a stop. I have the low speed "shake" as well. Almost feels like gear teeth coming together...best way I can explain it. Do you have that very annoying "bump" like someone tapped you from behind a few seconds after coming to a stop?

Yeah i got that issue too!

So far I haven't found any fixes for anything. Thinking about getting a custom tune...maybe that will help?!?!

I have noticed the shuttering at low speeds. I mostly thought it was the brakes. When I leave for work tomorrow I will see if it shudders still, I go down a bit of a decline leaving my home and everytime I stop before entering the street I feel exactly what you guys are saying. I have just gotten use to the trucks characteristics as there is another noise I forgot about. Whenever I enter driveways angled, my car makes a noise that sounds like the tire is rubbing on the fender (hard noise to describe). Its really quick and I am just so sick of the dealership, but I don't want the cause of the sound to be damaging the truck. Anyone else have this odd sound?

Since my truck was repaired last week I have only had 2 poor shifts out of the truck, 1 was a lunge feeling shift into second gear and another was a studder between shifts (I believe 1 to 2 also) where I felt 2 clunks really close together.

I think i have that same double clunk issue. whenever i come to a stop and then take off again, I get two clunks that almost sound like a metal groaning/brake dragging sort of clunk if that makes sense. i didnt really notice this until after i had them do the tranny reset tsb. with the windows down it sort of sounds like its coming from the passenger side and, post tsb, the whole tranny just feels sort of loose. I love this truck and plan to keep it for years if possible, but these weird little problems are the sort of thing that'll make me want to trade/sell it in a while when the "new" wears off.

I feel ya man. This will probably be my last ford after dealing with the service department. They never fully reported my issues when I took my truck in. I had tire wear and told them, they said they did alignment, I checked it before and after they had the truck, they never touched, i checked all the bolts for camber, caster and toe, nothing was touched. I fixed the front toe which was causing outside tire wear on the front.

Anyways, truck clicked twice today from transmission....so hmmm...I'd hate to sell this thing so early, especially after my uncle bagged on me for buying a ford and he has had ZERO issues with his Toyota Tundra
