Leaking power steering pump

Hey guy,

Noticed red oil on the driveway the other so took the truck in for some service and a look at what was leaking. One my 2009 FX4 Screw.

I was thinking tranny (red fluid) but dealer telling me its the power steering pump hose is leaking... but its not the hose, its the pump assembly leaking at the hose. With my truck 2000mile out of warranty, dealer throws a $500 part bill my way. Not impressed really.

Anyone else see this?

Have not heard many complaints about this, don't think its common. Sucks you where 2000 over warranty, sometimes they will cut you some slack if you just a bit over. $500 to replace a hose seems a bit excessive but I assume that includes diagnostic fees, etc...

Buy a 2011, no fluid or pump...electric power steering

It's electric [I]assisted[I] power steering. It's supposed to make for even smoother feel at the wheel and to take some of the strain off of the PS pump itself.

If you have the 6.2L you do have a hydraulic power steering module. If you do not, you are mistaken as all 3.5, 3.7, and 5.0 equipped trucks have the eps and no fluid reservoir.

He stated it was leaking from the pump at the hose, not the hose itself. Hence $500 for the module.

Yea, the 6.2's are the exception. Not sure why, but they did not swap to eps with that motor. Possibly because Ford wanted to direct port the motor directly from the Super Duty with minimal engineering? Just hypothesizing there...

The 6.2 engine is too heavy for EPS.

I have an 09. I had a power steering switch replaced because of a leak. Not sure if its the same piece. I didn't even know it. They told me when I took it in for a state inspection. It was covered under warranty. But I only have 22,000 miles on my truck. My truck has a lift. Thought maybe they would try to blame the lift some how. Sorry about your issue. It sucks to have to pay that kind of cash just cause some faulty piece of equipment.

Yes, Brandon Ford. They are an awesome dealer though and have bent over backwards for me. Could be that we buy anywhere from 1-4 vehicles a year from them as well. Not their fault for the leak but really was hoping this was going to be cover under the remaining powertran. They did give me a preferred customer discount for the work. So the installed price will be $273 plus taxes.

My truck is an 09 5.4L.
