Real world fuel economy
Real world fuel economy
Thought I would post my experience with fuel economy since owning my truck.
What I have: 2010 Screw, 5.5' box, 5.4L, 4x4, 3.73
Total distance driven: 15883 Km (9927 miles)
Fuel ecomomy: 15.8 L/100Km (17.2 MPG)
Approximately 80% city miles.

as Bill Engval always sez........ here's yer sign
Thanks, thought it was self explanitory, but edited the post for the sign carriers.
2010 STX 4x4
4.6L 3V
3.73 LSD
6 speed
stock 18" STX decor package wheels/tires
90% city driving
2000 miles on the truck now roughly
First tank I measured was actually the 2nd or 3rd time of adding fuel to it, but it came out to 15.8 or 15.6 or something like that.
I filled it up to the top again, reset the trip, and when it came time to add fuel, the cost was too much $$ so I added 5.004 gallons and kept track of the amount added. I did this twice (10 gallons total) until I finally bit the bullet and filled it up (the NEXT day fuel dropped $0.20 a gallon, of course).
I put in 26 gallons exactly when I filled it up, and prior to that the pair of 5 gallon trips, so exactly 36 gallons, which is the spec of the tank coincidentally.
530 miles driven on 36 gallons gets me a ****-poor 14.7 MPG.
I filled it up to the top again and reset the trip meter, I'll see how it does this time around after adding a Truxedo Truxport cover to it the next day. I drove it about 30-40 miles after filling up before FedEx dropped the package off and I had it installed, so maybe it'll help.
I'm hoping once it loosens up a little (the engine, trans, drivetrain, etc.) things will get better but posts showing 17+ MPG from a 5.4L just really depresses me
I'd like to see a realistic 18-22 MPG from it to be honest.

5,000 km on the odometer
Truck is completely stock with 18" wheels and Wrangler SRA tires.
Avg: 13L/100km = 18 US MPG = 21 Imperial MPG
I've reset the average fuel economy quite a few times and it always settles back to the same average after driving for a bit. Verified by hand calculation a few times as well.
After I refuel, the kilometers to empty shows 999. I think that's as high as its able to display.

Your truck sounds like a keeper. I am only getting 15.7 (hand calculated) over 9,900 miles and mine is an XLT 4X4 auto with stock P-Series tires and 3.55 axle. and I live and drive mostly in the outskirts of the city.
10 fx4 screw
I get 17+ empty on the highway.
I get 13 in town.
11 towing the 24ft trailer on the highway
5-8 in town hauling the 5x8 and leaving it idling for the dogs.

2010 F150 SCREW Lariat 4x4, 6 spd trans.
I drive with a very light foot as I like to see just how much I can really squeeze out of this thing. I anticipate stops and redlights and coast into them so as to minimize my stop-and-go stuff. Even doing all of that I would be LUCKY to get a real 14.5 MPG around town.
On the highway I probably get about the same...14 to 14.5. I do 75 to 85 MPH and the truck just sucks on gas at those speeds.
If I'm on a state highway or county road with long stretches of 45 to 55 MPH with no lights, flat ground, and little traffic then I can get 18 to 20 MPG out of it...but those conditions are exceedingly rare. In fact the only time I saw them was on a road trip in the Florida panhandle.
Pulling the boat it's not even worth tracking. My computer told me 11.5 MPG the other day and it is notoriously optimistic. It's always 1/2 to 3/4's of an MPG on the high side.
Fuel efficiency isn't the trucks strong suit. I knew it on the front end but I do wish they had found a way to squeeze some more MPGs out of it. It gets almost the same mileage that my 2001 F150 got. Crazy.

I reset MPG after a filling up on the way to my brothers house. It's a 21 mile trip, and I made every light. I let him drive as he knew the way to our next stop. After starting the engine, he commented on the great gas mileage I got in the new truck. I glanced over at the info center and it read 25.6 MPG.
It seems the trucks MPG "sweet spot" is 45-50 MPH with the 5.4L and 6R80E tranny. In town stop and go produces around 14 MPG (or less).

My 2010, 4x4, 4.6 liter, 3.55 rear end, SuperCab has 3500 miles on it. I keep track of every gallon that goes in. I check with paper and it has go 16 mpg, the puter shows it at 17.4 mpg. A Canada trip is on it also that covered 1339 miles pulling a 1800 # load boat behind. Some miles empty and some in town and some with boat not loaded on short trips. I don't think that too bad. The puter is off on the high side, so you cann't go by that.........
Every now and then you hear about 20 plus, but I take that with a grain of salt.....The 4.6 has the 3 valve, 6 speed tranny also. I do believe that this truck is getting 1 to 2 better mileage than my trade-in 2004, with 3.55 gears.

Geezzz..... You numbers are outstanding, almost seems unreal.
My 2010 fx4....5.4l, 3.73 screw does 18l/100 km
it now has 14000 km
first 10 000km were 50/50 city and highway, need to point out that i usually drive highway speed average of 75mph ( 120km/h) but that only revs the engine to 2000rpms...( it's a known fact in Quebec, Canada that cops will tolerate 119km/h even if max is 100 km/h)
towning my po-up coleman trailer ( 3200lbs) on highway = 18l/100km
completely weight free just city and highway commute = 18l/100 km
heavy load in box + 4 overweight buddies to fishing shack + towing 4000lbs trailer = 18l/100km
soooo.......... it's pretty much 18l/100km
at 10 000km, changed the oil for full synthetic, changed air filter cause of too much dirt roads, and switched it super unleaded...... now does 17l/100km
so in non metric form, went from 13.07 mpg to 13.84 mpg!!!
still lightyears away from you guys!!!
I'll be heading on a long, light load, flat trip in a week...Montreal to South Carolina, cant wait to see if slower highway speeds will make much of a difference
