On a side note, you said you were using an iPod nano. That will not be effected by the iOS 4.0 update described earlier.
One way you know it's connected to Sync (at least on an iPhone) is you loose the ability to select songs through the iPhone, all song selections must be done though Sync. But I don't know about an iPod Nano, might not apply there.

I'm probably the only person with no music on their iPhone. When I plug in to the usb I don't think anything shows up on the mess. center. The wife's Nano is loaded with tunes, I grab it from her and plug it in to reconfirm what the mess. center says.

Update
I plugged the Nano and pushed AUX mess. center said "Sync Line In" Nothing happened. Then I pushed Menue and the mess. center said "Not available"
I'm either doing this incorrectly or Sync is not function properly or the Nano is not formated for Sync. Can someone walk me through a step by step proceedure how to play music from the Nano (I won't be offended if you do like I'm a 5 year old).
